The majority are smartly dressed with a few in mechanics' clothes.

The Royal Navy during the Second World War A lifeboat manned by the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy is in unusual surroundings as it rides 'pick-a-pack' on a motor lorry in the Red Cross Parade at Freetown, Sierra Leone. Here it can be seen passing some houses.

Opening of Coney Island Cycle Path Edgar S. Thomson (American, active 1890s-1900s). , 1896. glass plate negative This bicycle path, in the center of the grand Ocean Parkway, is still in use today. Stretching from Prospect Park to Coney Island, it provided easy access to the beach from the central parts of Brooklyn. Around the turn of the twentieth century, a new type of safer bicycle made biking cheaper and easier and contributed to the widespread use of the bicycle by both men and women for leisure and transportation. The bicycle also became a symbol of free, mobile women and was an important tool for female emancipation. By this time, however, many more railroad lines and large steamships linked Coney Island to the city, enabling larger crowds than ever to spend the weekend at the beach. 1896

A sampan (pinyin: shanban; Cantonese: sam-pan) is a relatively flat bottomed Chinese wooden boat from 3.5 to 4.5 m (11.5 to 14.8 ft) long. Some sampans include a small shelter on board, and may be used as a permanent habitation on inland waters. Sampans are generally used for fishing or transportation, in coastal areas or rivers. It is unusual for a sampan to sail far from land as they do not have the means to survive rough weather. The word 'sampan' comes from the original Cantonese term for the boats, 'three planks'. The name referred to the hull design, which consists of a flat bottom (made from one plank) joined to two sides (the other two planks). The design closely resembles Western boats like the scow or punt. Sampans may be propelled by poles, oars (particularly a single, long oar called a yuloh) or may be fitted with outboard motors.
