Joseph Anthony Jr. Artist: Gilbert Stuart (American, North Kingston, Rhode Island 1755-1828 Boston, Massachusetts). Dimensions: 30 x 24 1/2 in. (76.2 x 62.2 cm). Date: ca. 1795-98.A native of Newport, Rhode Island, and Stuart's first cousin, Joseph Anthony was trained as a silversmith and jeweler, his family business. Anthony moved to Philadelphia about 1783 where his trade thrived, and he married Henrietta Hillegas of that city shortly thereafter. This picture, painted in Stuart's best English manner, fully captures the confident mood of this substantial craftsman, whose ruddy good looks and careful dress suggest success and happiness. Richard Thomas III. Artist: James Peale (American, Chestertown, Maryland 1749-1831 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). Dimensions: Sight: 2 1/4 x 1 7/8 in. (7.3 x 5.9 cm). Date: 1796.The youngest brother of Charles Willson Peale learned how to paint in oil and watercolor at his brother's side. For a time, they worked in such close collaboration that it is difficult to distinguish their separate hands. In 1786, they divided the business: James would paint miniatures and Charles the oil portraits, an arrangement that did not prohibit either artist from executing works in the other's medium. James's extraordinary skill as a miniaturist, however, kept him constantly employed. He painted Colonel Richard Thomas (1744-1832) in 1796, when this gentlemen of the distinguished West Chester, Pennsylvania, family was a state senator and a member of the fifth Congress. He studied with John Singleton Copley and Benjamin West, both of whom spent the years of the Revolution in London, leaving the American field open for Peale to become the portraitist of the American Revolution (BSLOC_2019_7_160)

George Washington. Artist: Gilbert Stuart (American, North Kingston, Rhode Island 1755-1828 Boston, Massachusetts). Dimensions: 30 1/4 x 25 1/4 in. (76.8 x 64.1 cm). Date: begun 1795.This portrait of President Washington, called the Gibbs-Channing-Avery portrait, is one of eighteen similar works known as the Vaughan group. The first of this type, presumably painted from life and then copied in all the others, originally belonged to Samuel Vaughan, a London merchant living in Philadelphia and a close friend of Washington. This original portrait by Stuart, painted in 1795 according to Rembrandt Peale, was subsequently acquired by Joseph Harrison of Philadelphia. While in Harrison's collection, Rembrandt Peale copied it many times. The version now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, considered to be one of the earliest and best replicas, was sold to Stuart's close friend, Colonel George Gibbs, and subsequently descended in the Gibbs family.
