Liberty Bell on display in the State House (Independence Hall), Philadelphia, c. 1940. It is unknown when the Liberty Bell first cracked, but it is speculated that a narrow split developed in the early 1840's after nearly 90 years of hard use. In 1846, metal workers repaired the bell, widening the thin crack to prevent its farther spread. The wide 'crack' was actually a repair. Later a second crack, developed, ending the bell's use (BSLOC_2019_4_62)
