Launching the World's First Atomic Buoy at Baltimore, Maryland. Here a Martin-Marietta Corp. official measures the radiation coming from the Coast Guard's atomic buoy counterweight after installation of a SNAP-7A strontium-90 thermoelectric generator. The readings he got were .1 MR at the top of the counterweight (where he is making the measurement in the picture), .02 MR at the sides, and 2.5 MR at the bottom. The buoy counterweight weighing 4000 pounds has four inch thick cast steel sides and a two inch thick flange at the bottom. The hose shown is filling the tube full of fresh water to aid in the transfer of heat from the SNAP-7A generator inside to the sea water which will surround the outside.

Cleaning & Repair (of Buoys). A worker checks the interior of the stem of a large buoy during its reconditioning at the Coast Guard Base in Gloucester City, N.J. This buoy is one of the older types still in use in certain waters. The worker would not be doing this on a newer, modern radar reflector type buoy as the stem is permanently sealed.
