The early 1900s caption reads: "Sons of the Fins-Slagfinn, Egil, and Volund. They traveled south to Sweden and came to lake in place Wolfsdale and saw on margin of lake three maidens sitting and spinning flax." The three brothers and their Valkyrie-wives are believed to represent the first three ages of the fourth humanity. Oldest was Egil, the innocent, whose children became the servants of Thor. The second was named Slagfinn, the hunter; the third, which in the tale gave the seed of the fourth great age, was Volund, the elf-king, the soul of humanity during that phase. Early one morning they found three women on the shore spinning flax, and beside them lay their swan-disguises, for they were Valkyries.

"Beowulf" is the title of the oldest English epic, probably composed early 8th-century by Anglian bard in the vicinity of Northumbria. The hero of the epic is Beowulf. He received the sword Naegling, said to be the best in the world, after defeating the monster Grendel and Grendel's mother. The sword does not survive his fight with the dragon (pictured in this 1923 drawing) and snaps in two.

According to Greek mythology, Niobe was the daughter of Tantalus, the king of Sipylus in Lydia. Her husband was Amphion, the king of Thebes. Niobe boasted that she was greater than Leto, the Titan who had only two children, Apollo and Artemis. Furious at such a boast and seeing it as an insult to their mother, Apollo killed all of Niobe's six sons and Artemis killed all of Niobe's six daughters, so the myth goes. Niobe was then turned into a rock on Mount Sipylus and there she weeps as the snow melts from above, as seen in this illustration.
