Lace Made 1844-1845 England. William Henry Fox Talbot, one of the inventors of photography, was a polymath who felt as comfortable writing Greek verse as he did experimenting with botany and chemistry. His negative/positive processóand the reproductive possibilities it engenderedócame to dominate photography until the digital age. Talbot held artistic aspirations, but he was also interested in the myriad scientific and commercial applications for photography. He hoped that his photographs of lace, for example, might make it easier to copy intricate patterns and thus facilitate manufacturing. The negative for this print was likely made by laying a fragment of lace upon a piece of photosensitized paper and exposing it to the sun, without the aid of a camera.. Salted paper print . Vase with Flowers. The work of the renowned French still-life painter and etcher Jean Baptiste Monnoyer was in such demand that it was frequently imitated. An example of this is this monumental print that was published in Amsterdam as part of a series of thirteen sheets. At the time they found ready buyers, and yet hardly any impressions have come down to us.

Five Prints of Flowers in Glass Vases. Johannes Teyler from Nijmegen was educated as a philosopher and mathematician, but also worked later as a military engineer. He invented a method for printing impressions in colour, for which he received a patent in 1688. The colours had to be applied to the copper plate by hand for each individual impression. Because this was very labour intensive, his colour printing process found little following.

A Fruit Piece, from The Houghton Gallery Published 1781 England. Richard Earlom was one of many talented printmakers to work on John Boydellís massive printing project to reproduce Sir Robert Walpoleís painting collection at Houghton. The finished two-volume book included 162 prints, including 27 by Earlom. (The original works were sold to Catherine the Great and are now in the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.) Earlom was particularly favored for his ability to re-create painterly tones in his mezzotints, as is evidenced by this Fruit Piece and Flower Piece..
