KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - KSC Deputy Director Dr. Woodrow Whitlow Jr. shares the new vision for space exploration with the students, the next generation of explorers, at Howard Bishop Middle School in Gainesville, Fla. Whitlow talked about our destiny as explorers, NASAs stepping stone approach to exploring Earth, the Moon, Mars and beyond, how space impacts our lives, and how people and machines rely on each other in space. The presentation also included a downlink from the International Space Station for students to ask questions of the Expedition 8 crew, Commander Michael Foale and Flight Engineer Alexander Kaleri. Howard Bishop Middle School is one of 50 nationwide (four in Florida) in the NASA Explorer Schools (NES) Program. NES establishes a three-year partnership between NASA and 50 NASA Explorer Schools teams, consisting of teachers and education administrators from diverse communities nationwide.

The V.I. National Guard State Family Program Office presented the 2021 National Guard Family Program Community Purple Award to the La Reine Chicken Shack on Monday, August 22, 2022. In a small ceremony held at the Joint Force Headquarters facility, Mr. Angel E. Diaz Jr., veteran, and co-owner of the La Reine Chicken Shack, was awarded the Family Program Community Purple Award, which is awarded to organizations or businesses that exemplifies the true meaning of the purple concept within the National Family Program by working with and for supporting both Army and Air Guard activities, service members and their families.

Visit of Secretary Dirk Kempthorne to the Tuba City Boarding School on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona--largest school in the Bureau of Indian Education system. Joining Secretary Kempthorne for the tour of new buildings and classrooms, and for discussions with students, teachers, and parents, were education officials including Bureau of Indian Education Director Kevin Skenandore, Indian Affairs Office of Facilities, Environmental and Cultural Resources Director Jack Rever, Tuba City Boarding School Principal Don Coffland, and Tuba City School Governing Board President Frieda Maloney.
