Chardin carefully selected objects to convey specific meanings. A palette with brushes, placed atop a paint box, symbolizes the art of painting. Building plans, spread beneath drafting and surveying tools, represent architecture. An ornate bronze pitcher alludes to goldsmithing, and the red portfolio symbolizes drawing. The plaster model of J. B. Pigalle's Mercury, an actual work by a friend of Chardin's, stands for sculpture. An old man and a boy kneeling before a tombstone in a dilapidated ruin. Executed with the bravura brushwork and dark palette of his early Munich period, this painting shows the influence of Chase's contemporary, the French artist Antoine Vollon, and of the seventeenth-century Spanish still lifes that Vollon also appreciated. The canvas shows a tabletop with a plate containing a striped bass and a salmon; a weakfish lies directly on the table and a bowl appears in the background. Chase's goal seems to have been to make what he called "an uninteresting subject so inviting and entertaining by means of fine technique that people will be charmed at the way you've done it."Writing in "The New Republic" in March 1917, the American connoisseur and collector Leo Stein commented on Chase's still-life paintings of fish: "Of all non-sentimental still life.. they are with their bulging mVanitas, 1656, by Pieter Claesz (1597-1660), oil on canvas, 39x60 cm.The Border Widow, William Bell Scott (Edinburgh, Scotland, 1811 - 1890) 1861CLAESZ Pieter (c.1597-166Oil on wood (Voronezh Museum of Art)Cleopatra testing poisons on those condemned to death, Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912 Dutch), Oil on canvas. A seemingly uncomplicated representation of two potatoes suspended by a string against a wood panel, The Irish Question is an unusual and striking trompe líoeil painting that raises numerous questions. The title may refer to the troubled status of the Irish in the late 19th century; the hanging potatoes inflect this allusion with either ominous overtones or a dark sense of humor. Illusionistic paintings such as The Irish Question offer an enjoyable form of visual deception, and the pseudonymous signature ìS.S. Davidî suggests that De Scott Evans relished the opportunity to puzzle his viewers on many levels.. Oil on canvas . De Scott Evans(SIN TITULO). Author: GUILLERMO PEREZ VILLALTA.
