The Sacrifice of Polyxena. Artist: Charles Le Brun (French, Paris 1619-1690 Paris). Dimensions: 67 5/16 × 51 9/16 in. (171 × 131 cm). Date: 1647.As recounted by the Roman poet Ovid (43 B.C.-A.D. 17/18), the compliant Polyxena is led to her death at the sacrificial altar to appease the ghost of the hero Achilles. Her mother tries to restrain her while the soldier Neoptolemus raises his sword. The infant holding a chest of incense and the austere priest complete this beautifully choreographed composition, which was painted the year following Le Brun's return from Rome, where he had studied with Poussin. Le Brun was to become the official painter to Louis XIV and a leading figure in the academy. He later wrote a treatise on expressions and this enormously influential aspect of his art is well in evidence in this early masterpiece. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

In the classic tale from the Hebrew Bible, or Christian Old Testament, Samson is an Israelite of great physical strength. He confides in his lover, Delilah, that the secret of his strength is his long hair, which has never been cut since the day he was born. Delilah betrays Samson by informing his enemies. In this famous scene, Samson is asleep in the lap of his mistress who urges an accomplice to cut Samsons hair with the scissors she wields. He is hesitant and afraid. Eventually, the servant cuts Samsons hair. Samson is overpowered and arrested. But when he is taken in chains to a temple feast, Samson pushes over two great pillars causing the entire temple to fall down, killing everyone inside, including himself.

In this work, court painter Jacob Huysmans depicted Frances Stuart as Minerva, the goddess of intellect, military victory, and the arts, and a daughter of Jupiter. She sports the Roman goddesss attributes: spear and armor, including a helmet and shield adorned with the head of Medusa. Minerva was also associated with chastity, and so the choice to represent Stuart in this guise might have been understood in the context of sexual intrigues at the seventeenth-century court of King Charles II of England. The king was infatuated with Stuart and, although he chose her as the model for Britannia, the female personification of Great Britain, she is thought not to have succumbed to his advances. A Girl Drawing and a Boy near a Statue of Venus. The girl is drawing a statue, a copy of the famous Venus Medici, a Classical sculpture in the Uffizi in Florence. The young artist also has other models at her disposal: the boy shows her a head of Venus and in the background is the head of a Greek philosopher. The plinth is filled with a painted rendering of a marble relief of children (putti) at play.

The Death of Cleopatra ca. 1645-55 Guido Cagnacci The subject, from Plutarch's Lives (1st century A.D.), is Cleopatra's suicide by an asp bite following the defeat of her beloved Mark Antony at the battle of Actium. It provided Cagnacci with an erotically charged and emotionally engaging action that appealed to the Baroque imagination, whether in poetry, theater, or painting. Although Cagnaccis picture is indebted to the example of Guido Reni, its flagrant sensuality is utterly singular. Cagnacci made a trip to Rome in the company of Guercino, where Caravaggios example of painting directly from the model proved transformative.. The Death of Cleopatra.
