Valance late 16th-early 17th century British The scenes illustrate the biblical account of King Ahasuerus and Queen Vashti as told in the Book of Esther. Ahasuerus commanded Vashti to show her beauty to those gathered at a feast. She refused and was banished. Although this story was rarely depicted, that of Esther, Vashti's successor, was a particularly popular subject in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century embroideries. Intended for a bed, this valance was most likely part of a set showing scenes from the story of Esther. The contrasting examples of a willful and a virtuous wife lead one to conjecture that the set was a wedding gift.. Valance 229990

Panel formed of three smaller panels, interior decoration of the apartment of the comtesse dArtois at Versailles 18th century French Carved with the lyre of Apollo and ivy branches, a trophy of gardening tools, as well as a foliated wreath intertwined with flaming torches, this panel, composed of three parts, was part of the interior decoration of the apartment of the comtesse dArtois at Versailles. In 1773 Marie-Thérèse of Savoy married the grandson of Louis XV (and younger brother of the future Louis XVI) the comte d’Artois. The following year her first floor (American second floor) apartment in the Midi Wing of the palace was renovated to include a small library on the mezzanine level. Jules Hugues Rousseau and his younger sibling Jean-Siméon, who were decorative painters as well as carvers, were responsible for the delicate carving of the paneling in this room.
