Maker: Style of Nicola da Urbino (Italian, active by 1520-died 1537/38 Urbino). Date: ca. 1525 or later.These two footed bowls (see also 65.6.7), or coppe, are part of one of the most striking series of maiolica produced in the 1520s. They were made for an unidentified patron and are painted with busts of illustrious heroes and heroines, ancient and modern. This radiance was in large part supported by the Dutch mastery of fishing for herring and by preserving this otherwise undistinguished silver fish. So much of the national wealth was accumulated through this industry that Amsterdam was said to have been built on herring bones. Pair of Bracelets 1840 Painted by John Carlin American These matching bracelets are made of 14-karat yellow gold and have wide chain-link bands engraved with flowers at the terminals. The clasps are set with portrait miniatures on ivory of two young women, presumably sisters, painted by American artist John Carlin. The reverse of each clasp is a locket, which holds a braid of the sitters hair beneath a crystal face. One miniature depicts a young woman with dark hair, smoothly coifed across the crown of her head with a center part and falling in ringlets to her shoulders. She is portrayed in a head and neck format, turned to the proper left, with a modulated background simulating clouds. The reverse of this portrait is engraved with the initials "MLP" and the date "1840."
