Livre de Moresques, page 5 (verso) 1546 Francesco di Pellegrino Italian This book of moresques reproduces designs by the Italian artist Francesco Pellegrino, first published in book form by the artist in Paris in 1530 under the title La Fleur de la Science de Pourtraicture. It is considered the first elaborate publication to introduce the exotic designs in Western Europe, although the ornament was known already through the import of textiles and other objects from the Near East. The publication of the ornament in books and prints immensely increased the interest of native artist and it soon became highly fashionable. Pellegrinos designs were reordered and presented in compressed form in the Livre de Moresque, which appears to have been published first by Cornelis Bos in Antwerp in 1543. Gormont subsequently published the book in Paris in 1546, possibly with the consent of Bos, whom had spent some time in Paris after his expulsion from Antwerp in 1544, and had settled in Germany (Nurem

Band Fragment 13th-14th century This fragment of a Mamluk textile is woven in an exceptionally fine tapestry weave. The tall horizontal border contains a fragmentary thuluth inscription in white and outlined in beige, interrupted by a roundel decorated by an arabesque design in black, outlined in beige on a blue ground. The inscriptions background blue colour is further decorated with scrolls and black dots. Above and below the central band are bands of peony scrolls. The style of the decoration recalls Mamluk metalwork which often follows a similar layout. The surviving inscription, “…and peace among men…” relates to the birth of the Prophet but does not provide information about the maker or patron. This fragment may originally have been part of a robe of honour, which was often presented to officials in the court as a sign of favour from the caliph.. Band Fragment 448225

Anagram in Honor of Charles III, Duke of Lorraine and Bar ca. 1595-1605 Aegidius Sadeler II Netherlandish In a complex synthesis of text and image, this work by Aegidius Sadeler praises Charles III, Duke of Lorraine and Bar (1543-1608), a staunch defender of Catholicism during the French Wars of Religion. At the center of the medallion, within the circle formed by the snake eating its own tail, is Charless coat of arms, inverted from left to right. Although it is somewhat abraded, the rampant lions at lower center and the fleurs-de-lis and pair of fish on either side can be discerned. Inscribed on the double-cross from which the medallion appears to hang, also inverted and executed in the same combination of white gouache and black ink, are the names of Christ (IHS) and the Virgin (MARIA, the five letters intertwined).
