Plate with two lovers dated 1644 Perhaps Workshop of Antoine Conrade Faience, or tin-glazed and enameled earthenware, first emerged in France during the sixteenth century, reaching widespread usage among elite patrons during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, prior to the establishment of soft-paste porcelain factories. Tray with Daoist Figures. Culture: China. Dimensions: H. 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm); W. 18 3/8 (46.7 cm); D. 11 5/8 (29.5). Date: 16th century.The eight figures, male and female, assembled on a riverbank represent figures important to the Chinese tradition of Daoism. Some are members of a group of exemplars, known as the Eight Immortals, who became popular during the development of the Quanzhen (Complete Realization) sect of Daoism during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. These luminaries are based loosely on historical figures of the Tang dynasty (618-906). Here, they await the arrival of Shoulao, a principal figure in the Daoist pantheon and a symbol of immortality. He is shown to the left flying above the waves on the back of a crane. Stove Tile with Saint John the Evangelist and Samson late 15th century Buda Castle Workshop The corner tile is from the decorative outer cladding of a closed wood-burning stove in the Chapter House of the Augustinian Abbey at Waldhausen in southern Austria. The abbey was dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist, who appears on the heraldic shield. Behind the shield, Samson strangles the lion. Date: second quarter 15th century.The three scenes are identified by inscriptions in cartouches that read: How Acteon went hunting with his companions; How Diana changed Acteon into a stag (he had surprised the goddess bathing); How Acteon's companions looked for him and could not find him. The story is from Ovid's Metamorphoses, which enjoyed enormous popularity in the Middle Ages and beyond. This is one of a pair of marriage chests (cassoni) owned by the Museum. . The various stages of silk production are depicted on the rim of this dish. In the centre, three women are seated at a table and a fourth woman is standing, holding a pot of tea. This is an early example of a famille rose plate: porcelain painted with pink enamel. Famille rose became one of the most popular forms of porcelain imported to Europe in the later 18th century.
