Hercules vanquishes Cacus.Hercules was robbed by Cacus, whom he killed after a fierce fight. With his right hand Hercules powerfully pulls Cacus head back, forcing his own body to tilt in the opposite direction. At the end of the 17th century, the clash between the two brawny men symbolized Stadholder William IIIs struggle against the king of France.

California. Artist: Hiram Powers (American, Woodstock, Vermont 1805-1873 Florence). Dimensions: 71 x 18 1/4 x 24 3/4 in. (180.3 x 46.4 x 62.9 cm). Date: 1850-55, carved 1858.Allegories of places--from cities to continents--were popular artistic subjects during the nineteenth century. The California Gold Rush, which began in 1848, inspired Powers to model this figure. In her left hand, she holds a divining rod, or miner's wand, which partially shields her nudity and carries the eye around the sculpture, pointing to the faceted crystals of quartz in which gold deposits were often found. In her right hand, behind her back, is a branch covered with thorns. Powers intended the symbolism to reflect good (the divining rod) versus evil (the thorns), with the additional moral message that all that glitters is not gold. "California" was the first sculpture by an American artist to enter the Metropolitan's collection. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

This photo of the statue known as Apollo Belvedere was taken in the late 1890s. This particular statue of the Greek god Apollo (also known by the Romans as Apollo) is housed at the Vatican and is a Roman copy fashioned in marble of the Greek original that was cast in bronze. It is one of the best known of ancient Classical sculptures and its fame is due in large part to the German art historian and archaeologist Johann Winckelmann, who praised it as the highest expression of ancient art. Frenzy, Artus Quellinus (I) (attributed to workshop of), after 1648 - in or before 1662 The insane is naked on a tree stump -like, straw -covered elevation on a square plinth. She has the curved left leg forward with the foot over the plinth, the right is placed diagonally backwards. She pulls on her hair with both hands, thereby bends the upper body to one side, causing the left hand to the top and the right under the head. The tongue protrudes from the wide open mouth, in which the top row of teeth becomes visible. On the back of the head the hair is held together in a bun, a braid of which depends. A cloth runs under her legs from her right lower arm and is struck back over the left leg, covering the lap. A second cloth is draped over the rear of the elevation. The square pedestal with profiled base and cover plate shows a profiled deep -tonging panel on each side, in which a smaller window. Diana with a Bow, 1890, Frederick William MacMonnies, American, 1863 - 1937, 30 1/4 x 20 1/4 x 16 1/2 in. (76.84 x 51.44 x 41.91 cm), Bronze, United States, 19th century, Diana, the ancient Roman goddess of the hunt, has just released an arrow from her bow. The small crescent in her hair refers to her role as moon goddess.

Resting Satyr. From Tivoli, 2nd century AD. A youthful satyr, wearing a panther skin across his chest, rests languidly against a tree. The statue was found in Hadrian's villa at Tivoli and is a close version of a statue probably by the Athenian sculptor Praxiteles of c350 BC. It was a very popular figure, known in some fifty Roman versions.
