Reclining Female Nude early 17th century Domenico Tintoretto Italian Domenico was the son and pupil of the renowned Venetian master, Jacopo Tintoretto. While the influence of Jacopos rhythmical line is evident in the drawings of his son, Domenico developed an individual style of draftsmanship characterized by softer and more naturalistic modeling, as illustrated in this study of a female nude, one in a series depicting heavily foreshortened figures in various reclining poses, including several others in the Lehman Collection. These studies may have served as reference points for the voluptuous, recumbent figures of Venus and Danae that abound in paintings by the Tintoretto workshop Domenicos series of female nudes epitomize the primacy of drawing after live models in the Tintoretto workshop.. Three Male Nudes, second quarter 1500s. Domenico Beccafumi (Italian, 1486-1551). Engraving; sheet: 21.7 x 41 cm (8 9/16 x 16 1/8 in.); platemark: 20.8 x 40.5 cm (8 3/16 x 15 15/16 in.). Domenico Beccafumi was a Mannerist painter and sculptor who completed several religious and civic commissions in his home town of Siena. An experimental printmaker, Beccafumi made a chiaroscuro print, mixing engraving and woodcut on the same sheet. This print is a rare impression of the engraved plate alone.

The Reclining Headless Body of Holofernes; Study of Female Semi-Nude Figure (on a small separate, unrelated sheet of blue paper, pasted onto the lower left of the large sheet) 1625-40 Guido Reni Italian This large sheet contains a study, probably drawn from life, for the left arm and shoulder of the headless body of Holofernes in a painted canvas portraying Judith and Holofernes executed by Reni in the mid-1620's. The Metropolitan Museum owns three reproductive engravings after this composition (nos. 51.501.4564; 51.501.4574; and 51.501.5060), and moreover, an exquisite study for the head of the Old Testament heroine (no.1992.70), which was formerly from the collection of the Earls of Leicester at Holkham Hall.The delicately drawn study of a half-draped female figure at lower left, also by Guido Reni, is a separate sketch that has been pasted by a collector, most likely Sebastiano Resta (see Warwick 2000) onto the larger sheet containing the drawing of Holofernes's body. Hermaphrodite as Caryatid.The hermaphrodite (a person both male and female) was designed for the decoration of the Hall of Constantine at the Vatican. The yoke on the shoulders refers to the motto of Pope Leo X, who commissioned the work: For my yoke is easy and my burden is light’. An androgynous figure was viewed in the Renaissance as embodying the divine, combining the beauty of both genders.

Jupiter and Antiope The Larger Plate Made 1659 Holland. Slightly later than Rembrandtís al fresco courtship scenes of the 1640s, this mythological outdoor work depicts one of the god Jupiterís many mortal conquests. Jupiter appears disguised as a horned and wreathed satyr who comes upon the nymph Antiope slumbering in the nude in a woodland glade. Antiope remains asleep as he delicately peels away her covering sheet and examines her body appreciatively. The relationship between the perspective of the viewer and of the figures is close; we seem nearly to enter the glade, and Antiopeís bed, along with the intrusive god. (17.62 x 14.45 cm) (sheet), Pen and brown ink and wash, over black chalk, Italy, 17th century, Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini traveled widely, painting dazzling, effervescent decorations for fashionable palaces and villas across northern Europe. His drawings are free and spirited, as demonstrated in this loosely executed study. The figure is the continent of America - - North and South still grouped together - - personified as a nearly naked woman, holding a bow and arrow, with a quiver at her waist, symbols easily recognized by Pellegrini's contemporaries. The decapitated head at America's foot alludes to the cannibalism presumably practiced in the New World.
