Study of a Nude Seen from the Back, and Two Studies of an Arm (recto); Nude Seen from the Back, with Subsidiary Studies of a Shoulder and Leg (verso) Made 1528 Italy. The two sides of this balanced sheet of anatomical drawings reflect the probing mind and line of an artist who trained in the workshop of Raphael, one of the finest draftsmen of the Italian Renaissance. His talented pupil Perino del Vaga explores the front and back of a nude male figure, using two very different graphic methods.On one side, his line is enhanced with hatching that gives his studies sculptural form. On the other side, he restricts himself to pure line in what becomes a kind of calligraphy of the pen. We even see him testing that pen in a series of rapid squiggles to the left of the figure.. Daphnis Running toward Chloe ca. 1798 baron François Gérard French In 1798 Gérard contributed six illustrations to the 1800 reprint of Longuss Les Amours pastorales de Daphnis et de Chloé (1559). This composition, which was not ultimately engraved in the publication, is a première pensée for the climax of the novel when the two lovers finally reunite. On the sheet, Daphnis emerges from the lower left corner and reaches for Chloe. Bold black chalk outlines delineate the figures from the chaotic background. Gérards animated blending of wash and white gouache gives the impression of a billowing dress that both covers and reveals Chloes lissome figure. This emphasis on the figure, much akin to that of antique sculpted drapery, reflects Gérards earlier education in the studio of Jacques Louis David (French, 1748-1825)..
