Carpet 17th century Spanish The heraldic shield shows an oak tree and bears an inscription that may read: NOBLES POR NOBLES DE CARABACA LOS ROBLES. It is surmounted by a generalized crest consisting of a helmet and four plumes. Pieces (8) 18th century possibly Spanish Delightfully fanciful silks were produced for the wide-skirted dresses of the eighteenth century, especially in France and England. This one, with its naïve yet striking combination of familiar and unusual motifs, does not fall into any of the established categories. Possibly it was woven in Spain, whose silk industry was revived by weavers from Lyons in the middle of the eighteenth century.. Pieces (8) 229233

Fragment of a Cover 3rd-6th century The rich variety of complex interlaces on this magnificent textile recalls the patterned floor mosaics that decorated buildings through the Roman and early Byzantine worlds. The large square with two attached semicircles suggests the floor plan of a basilica, a type of long hall. Basilicas, known across the Roman Empire but found most frequently in Italy, the western provinces, and North Africa, served various social, economic, and judicial functions.
