John the Baptist. Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, manufacturer (German, active 1710 - present) Modeled by Christian Gottfried Jüchtzer (German, 1752 - 1812) After a painting by Pompeo Batoni (Italian (Lucchese), 1708 - 1787) about 1783-1790 John the Baptist is described in the Bible as a man from the wilderness who preaches a baptism of repenteance for the forgiveness of sins. This porcelain sculpture is based on a painting showing him sitting beside the river Jordan, gesturing toward Jesus in the distance as if exclaiming, "Behold the Lamb of God" (John 1:29). Here the artist at the Meissen manufactory copies just the figure of the saint with a lamb, the Baptist's main attribute. The theme of repentance is echoed in the pendant to this piece showing a figure of Mary Magdalene (see 2022.43.1).

Apollo the Python-Slayer, c. 350 BC. Attributed to Praxiteles (Greek, c. 400BC-c. 330BC). Bronze, copper, and stone inlay; overall: 150 x 50.3 x 66.8 cm (59 1/16 x 19 13/16 x 26 5/16 in.). This bronze sculpture of Apollo formerly known as "Sauroktonos," or lizard-slayer, is attributed to the renowned Greek sculptor Praxiteles. The survival of an original bronze sculpture attributed to a known artist in ancient Greece is extraordinarily rare. This sculptor is otherwise known only from Roman marble copies of his works.

Figure of L'Amour Falconet on Pedestal. The bases of the pair have two corresponding inscriptions by Voltaire. On Cupid, the phrase translates as: Whoever you are, here is your master. He is, was, or ought to be. The Nymphs inscription responds with, No, you are not my master, nor have been, nor should be. Unglazed figures such as these, known as biscuit porcelain, were very popular due in part their likeness to marble. Figure incised "F" for Falconet. Pedestal inscribed in black: "QUI QUE TU SOIS, VOICI TON MAITRE IL L'EST LE FUT, OU LE DOIT ETRE."

Date: ca. 1878; cast 1907.Kemeys was America's first animalier (animal sculptor) of significance. His works were inspired by the untamed beasts he observed during frequent trips to the mountains and plains of the American West from the 1870s to the 1890s. He favored the American panther, depicting the animal in varied emotional states, from fierce combativeness to the maternal tenderness exemplified in this group. The surface treatment of the bronze reflects Kemeys's concern, first, for psychological expression and, second, for anatomical correctness. The cats' coats are loosely modeled, while the longer fur of the mother's chest and hindquarters is rendered in broad strokes. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Between them in the back figure of Maria-Magdalena, of whom some hair strands are still present. Maria in a good robe has a neck cloth and a cloak that has struck the knees to the left; John a counter and a breast closed in front of the breast, part of which has been knocked back over the left shoulder, so that the prayer cord and a sheath or fedal are visible on the side. Sometimes this preference is more apparent in his choice of theme than in his style. While often Neoclassical, his manner at times remained quite Rococo, as in the present example. Although Clodion received a number of important commissions for monumental marble sculptures, his fame and popularity rested on his skill at modeling small-scale terracotta groups for private collectors. The seeming spontaneity of this composition, a rapturous embrace, in which it appears that the senses are totally abandoned, was achieved only after much meditation. Pan ca. 1510-20 Andrea Briosco, called Riccio Italian In the half-human, half-animal features of the mythical race of satyrs, Andrea Briosco, called Riccio, found great expressive potential. Furthermore, the creatures classical associations appealed to the sculptors learned clientele, who purchased the bronze statuettes that were his preferred medium. These diminutive objects could also be made into useful desktop equipment for writing or lighting by placing containers for ink, sand, or oil in the satyrs arms. A hole in the shell shouldered by the Museums figure may have held a chain to tether a snuffer for candles stuck on the lamps pricket, while the gadrooned vase under his right arm would have contained ink. Although it seems almost oversize for its purpose, the statuette was nevertheless a practical object: the lamp was raised high enough to cast a wide light, and the ink was proffered at a reasonable level to dip in a quill. The Shepherdess of the Alps (La Bergère des Alpes) 1766-73 Sèvres Manufactory French Works of art by the French artist François Boucher (1703-1770), who held the prestigious title of first painter to the king, served as a highly popular source of inspiration for artists working in a variety of media in the middle decades of the eighteenth century. Prints made after paintings by Boucher were widely circulated and provided artists with compositions that could be faithfully reproduced in smaller scale or adapted to three-dimensional porcelain sculpture. Works by Boucher served as the source not only for the painted scenes on vases and snuffboxes, but also for the porcelain figures which were listed as "Enfants Boucher" (Boucher Children) in the factorys sales ledgers..
