Nude with Flowering Branch 1863 Gustave Courbet French This is the first Courbet nude acquired by the Americans Louisine (1855-1929) and H. O. Havemeyer (1847-1907), who amassed one of the largest and most representative private collections of the artists works. The couple purchased the painting in 1892, despite H. O. Havemeyers initial disapproval and their mutual agreement to forego buying nudes. Louisine Havemeyer considered it "one of the loveliest pictures I have ever seen," and her husband was soon won over by the work. The Birth of Venus 1875 Alexandre Cabanel French The first version of Cabanel's Birth of Venus (Musée d'Orsay, Paris) created a sensation at the Salon of 1863, which was dubbed the "Salon of the Venuses" owing to the number of alluring nudes on view. The Salon picture was purchased by Napoleon III for his personal collection. In 1875, New Yorker John Wolfe commissioned the present, slightly smaller, replica from Cabanel. The composition embodies ideals of academic art: mythological subject, graceful modeling, silky brushwork, and perfected form. A 'harem' is not a bordello, seraglio or brothel, but refers to the women's quarters, usually in a polygynous household, which are forbidden to men. It originated in the Near East and is typically associated in the Western world with the Ottoman Empire. Female seclusion in Islam is emphasized to the extent that any unlawful breaking into that privacy is haram ie, 'forbidden'. A Muslim harem does not necessarily consist solely of women with whom the head of the household has sexual relations (wives and concubines), but also their young offspring, other female relatives or odalisques, which are the concubines' servants. The harem may either be a palatial complex, as in Romantic tales, in which case it includes staff (women and eunuchs), or simply their quarters, in the Ottoman tradition separated from the men's selamlik. A hammam is a common bath house.
