The Edge of the Pool (Au Bord de l'Etang) Gustave Courbet (French, 1819-1877). , 1867. Oil on canvas, 31 3/4 x 39 3/8 in. (80.6 x 100 cm). Courbet painted this cool and rather mysterious landscape for the marquis de Pomereu, with whom he had stayed near his native town of Ornans in eastern France. The artist renders the characteristic features of the Doubs regioncraggy rocks, dark pools, tall oakswith a great range of color tones and variations in technique, including a liberal use of his palette knife as well as his brush. He attentively contrasts the brightly illuminated green strip of the far bank with the murky center of the pool. The small figures of the woman on the bank and the man in the boat add a pastoral note to the painting. European Art 1867

Date: 1885-95."Landscape" is typical of the large-scale woodland scenes that Blakelock painted before his confinement to a mental institution in 1899. An expansive landscape is framed by two copses of bushes and trees. Although ambitious in scale, the painting is not grandiose in effect--the panoramic vista does not show a natural wonder, dramatic weather, or even a recognizable locale. Instead, Blakelock represents a pure landscape at an indefinite time of day and explores the possibilities of color, texture, and pattern. In "Landscape," as in so many of his successful pictures, the artist transcends an observed subject to express his own personal vision. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: ca. 1891.George Inness, who began his career painting in the Hudson River School mode, embraced a variety of styles throughout his long career. Exposure to the work of French Barbizon artists as well as to the pantheistic philosophy of Swedish scientist and theologian Emanuel Swedenborg led him to develop a more personal approach to painting. Inness's later landscapes, such as this work, grew increasingly expressive and atmospheric. By the 1880s, a younger generation of European-trained artists--whose work was informed by the French Barbizon and Impressionist painters as well as by the Aestheticism of James McNeill Whistler--celebrated Inness as an American Original. Spring in Brittany 1874 Paul Sébillot French Sébillots landscapes reflect his passion for his native region of Brittany in northern France. The crucifix-like forms of the trees in this work evoke popular notions of deep-rooted, unsullied Breton spirituality. During a rainy painting expedition in 1877, the artist spent time documenting traditional stories told by local peasants—an experience that inspired his later career as a scholar of French folklore. Sébillots son sent this picture on the Merci Train that toured the United States in 1949, filled with gifts from French citizens grateful for American aid in the wake of World War II.. Date: probably mid-1850s.This landscape, probably painted in the mid-1850s, stands at the beginning of a long series of views of the countryside of the artist's native town. It may be identified by the distinctive church steeple that rises above the cluster of houses along the banks of the river Loue. The cliff in the distance is the Roche du Mont.
