Landscape with a Large Building. Artist: Franz von Hauslab the Younger (Austrian, Vienna 1798-1883). Dimensions: 9 5/8 x 15 3/4 in. (24.4 x 40 cm). Date: 1818-83.Von Hauslab is a little known figure in the history of art. As private tutor to the future Emperor Franz Joseph I, a high-ranking military officer, and innovative cartographer, he traveled widely. The loose and expressive treatment of the landscape and sky in his watercolor contrast with the minute precision of another drawing of the same unidentified building in the collection (53.600.3637). In Rome he joined a growing number of artists who formed one of the earliest schools of open-air landscape painting. Rocks in the Forest. Artist: Paul Cézanne (French, Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 Aix-en-Provence). Dimensions: 28 7/8 x 36 3/8 in. (73.3 x 92.4 cm). Date: 1890s.Cézanne treated the rocks in this composition much as he did the fruits in his still lifes, rendering the shapes with passages of subtly varied color. Green, blue, and purple tints, with an accent of golden sunlight at center, impart a shimmering vibrancy to the stones. The sense of delicacy is enhanced by the thin, watercolor-like application of pigment, typical of Cézanne's oils in the mid-1890s. Scholars traditionally identified the setting as the forest of Fontainebleau, where the artist worked around 1894, but it has also been suggested that the site is near Aix-en-Provence.
