The Day They Had Dreamed About - Joyful scenes of reunion at Saffron Walden yesterday.The Mayor of Saffron Walden, essex, yesterday invited hundreds of parents, mostly from Tottenham, North London, to a tea party in the town hall and corn exchange, at which they could meet those who are billeting their children, and talk things over. Doverhay Nursery- Life at An American-funded Nursery, Porlock, Devon, 1942 Children smile and wave for the camera as they sit along the length of the slide in the grounds of Doverhay Nursery in Porlock. Several others wave from the top of the slide. All are wearing sun hats.

Tommy Carries On -- Seven-year-old Tommy Bata, heir to the world-wide shoe business, fulfils family tradition when he arrived at London Airport to-day from New York to begin school in England. Tommy, whose home is in Canada, has made the trip by himself from Toronto. His father and mother with their other two children are in New York.Family tradition of self-reliance started with Tommy's grandfather, who set his own shoe-making business when he was only 13. He sent his son Thomas J. Bata, present head of the international concern, to school in England when he was seven. September 22, 1955.

"The Tragedy Of Russia" - The Russian caption to this picture states "A working - woman helps in the home after a day in the factory. She knows that the working - class future is assured" Russia's standard of living is low, yet - with rare exceptions - there are no inequalities. By bringing all down to the same level, (and raising countless thousands up to that level), the state hopes eventually to make the country's standard of living the highest in the world. "The Soviet Government appears deliberately to prevent intercourse between the Russian people and the rest of the world" said Mr. Attlee, British Prime Minister, when he addressed the Trade Union conference at Brighton on October 24th last. Referring to "The Russian Tragedy" he added that the Russians were subjected to "fantastic misrepresentations"about other nations. September 3, 1951.

Evacuees To a Communal Hostel in Thurlestone, South Devon, England, 1941 Mrs Findlayson (left, with her 2-month-old daughter Sheila), and Mrs Phillips (with her sons, 9-month-old Roland and 6-year-old Roy) smile for the camera in the sunshine outside the 'Love Nest' in Thurlestone, Devon. Mrs Findlayson and Mrs Phillips have been evacuated to this communal hostel and are caretakers of this rest home, attached to the hostel, which is used by husbands visiting their wives at the Communal Billets whilst home on leave.
