The Anglesey Column Statue - designed by Matthew Noble, 1860. 'In the early part of 1859 several friends and admirers of the late Marquis of Anglesey expressed a strong opinion that there should be some permanent memorial of that distinguished nobleman, and, it having been suggested that crowning the column erected to him in 1816 close to the Menai Bridge with a colossal statue would be a graceful tribute to his memory, a subscription list was opened, which was quickly filled, and Matthew Noble was intrusted with the execution of the work. From 1746 to 1749, the Swedish ship Gotha Lejon sailed on a mercantile mission to Canton. Several accounts of what transpired have survived. A handwritten journal has been attributed to Carl Fredrik von Schantz (1727-92). Another account of the mission of Gotha Lejon was compiled by Carl Johan Gethe (1728-65), a cartographer and natural historian. His diary is titled 'Diary of a Journey to East India begun on 18 October 1746 and ending June 20, 1749'. The Swedish East India Company (Swedish: Svenska Ostindiska Companiet or SOIC) was founded in 1731 in Gothenburg, Sweden, for the purpose of conducting trade with the Far East, and grew to become the largest trading company in Sweden during the 18th century. It closed in 1813.

Irezumi (れ墨, 墨, 紋身, 刺花, 剳青, 黥 or 刺青) is a Japanese word that refers to the insertion of ink under the skin to leave a permanent, usually decorative mark; a form of tattooing. The word can be written in several ways, each with slightly different connotations. The most common way of writing irezumi is with the Chinese characters れ墨 or 墨, literally meaning to 'insert ink'. The characters 紋身 (also pronounced bunshin) suggest 'decorating the body'. 剳青 is more esoteric, being written with the characters for 'stay' or 'remain' and 'blue' or 'green', and probably refers to the appearance of the main shading ink under the skin. 黥 (meaning 'tattooing') is rarely used, and the characters 刺青 combine the meanings 'pierce', 'stab', or 'prick', and 'blue' or 'green', referring to the traditional Japanese method of tattooing by hand.
