Vajrabhairava with His Consort Vajravetali 18th century Tibet Vajrabhairava has thirty-four arms and brandishes an array of weapons while his sixteen legs trample birds, dogs, and Hindu gods. He embraces his consort Vajravetali, an animated corpse in a yab-yum (Tibetan for father-mother”) sexual embrace. Such yab-yum images allude to the idea of dualistic totality encompassing compassion and skillful means embodied by the male and insight and wisdom associated with the female. They are surrounded by a flaming aureole that terminates in swirling clouds of smoke edged in gold. Vajrabhairava is a yidam, a deity that presides over the great tantras of the highest yoga. Like Yamantaka, he is a destroyer of death itself. Above sits the Buddha Akshobhya with twelve associated manifestations of Hayagriva (above and below), each in a different color. Double-Sided Painted Banner (Paubha) with God Shiva and Goddess Durga 1501-1700 Nepal. In this dynamic, double-sided painted banner from Nepal, designed to be carried high over the heads of the crowd during a religious festival, the Hindu God Shiva dances on his bull, Nandi, who turns his head upward to look lovingly at his Lord. This may represent Shiva as Nataraja, Lord of Dance, who is often depicted dancing atop his bull in Nepal. The other side depicts Durga, Shivaís shakti (energy), dancing on a white snow lion.The remarkably well-preserved painting is enlivened by the bold colors and vibrant textile patterns, the sashes flying out in all directions, and the swag at the top framed by flaring tassels. Large, striking flowers are scattered against the background. In his upper arms Shiva holds his traditional attributes the trident and the rosary (rudrakshamala). Siddhārtha Gautama (Sanskrit: िद्धार्थ गौतम; Pali: Siddhattha Gotama) was a spiritual teacher from ancient India who founded Buddhism. In most Buddhist traditions, he is regarded as the Supreme Buddha (P. sammāsambuddha, S. samyaksaṃbuddha) of our age, 'Buddha' meaning 'awakened one' or 'enlightened one'. The time of his birth and death are uncertain: most early 20th-century historians dated his lifetime as c. 563 BCE to 483 BCE, but more recent opinion dates his death to between 486 and 483 BCE or, according to some, between 411 and 400 BCE. By tradition, Gautama is said to have been born in the small state of Kapilavastu, in what is now Nepal, and later to have taught primarily throughout regions of eastern India such as Magadha and Kośala. Gautama, also known as Śākyamuni ('Sage of the Śākyas'), is the primary figure in Buddhism, and accounts of his life, discourses, and monastic rules are believed by Buddhists to have been summarized after his death and memorized by his followers.

Buddha Amoghasiddhi with Eight Bodhisattvas ca. 1200-50 Central Tibet Amoghasiddhi is one of the five Transcendent Buddhas who preside over the heavens of the cardinal directions, his realm being to the north. In this context he is identifiable by his green color. The five Taras below are likely the consorts of this cosmic group; the green one relates specifically to the central deity. Amoghasiddhi, who sits on a lotus throne surrounded by bodhisattvas, holds his right hand in abhaya mudra, a gesture that extends protection to devotees. The style of this tangka is indebted to twelfth-century eastern Indian painting traditions of the Pala period, as reflected in the dominant central figure and numerous descriptive details. Milarepa on Mount Kailash 1400-1500 Tibet. Milarepa (1040ñ1123) was a beloved Tibetan singer-poet, mystic, teacher, and saint whose name means ìcotton-clad,î is usually shown clothed in thin white cotton and cupping a hand to his earóa gesture typical of singers in India and the Himalayasóto enhance his hearing while blocking out extraneous noise. In this thangka, a painted cloth that can be rolled up for portability, Milarepa sits in a cave on Mount Kailash, which is sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus. In front of him, Lake Manasarovar (Marpam) flows by in wavy blue and green bands. Milarepa is flanked by his disciples, and his teacher, Marpa, appears in a medal-lion above him. The dazzling snow-covered peaks frame each of the central figures, and below them multicolored foothills appear as prismatic spikes refracting the sunís rays like jewels. Along the perimeter of the thangka, the five sisters of long life ride their mounts, accompanying Milarepa wherever he preaches his doctrine

Aizen Myōō 14th century Japan The blood-red body and flaming halo of Aizen Myōō, the Wisdom King of Passion, symbolize how, in Buddhist practice, the violent energies of carnality and desire can be converted in the pursuit of enlightenment. Aizen Myōō is the embodiment of rage: his hair stands on end, a snarling lion rises from his head, and his six arms brandish Esoteric Buddhist weapons and other emblems of power. The bow and arrow in his middle hands are attributes appropriated from Kama, the Hindu god of love. In contrast to this righteous anger, jewels of good fortune forming flaming clusters spill from a vase in front of the deitys lotus throne. While Aizen Myōōs appearance may instill fear, the faithful afflicted with problems of the heart address him as a popular intercessor. Tibet / China: 'The Fifth Dalai Lama's Descent from the Pure Lands' (18th century), Rubin Museum of Art. Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso, the Great Fifth Dalai Lama (1617-1682), was a political and religious leader in seventeenth-century Tibet. Ngawang Lozang Gyatso was the ordination name he had received from Panchen Lobsang Chokyi Gyaltsen who was responsible for his ordination. He was the first Dalai Lama to wield effective political power over central Tibet, and is frequently referred to as the 'Great Fifth Dalai Lama'.

Initiation Card (Tsakalis): Samanthabhadri (Consort). Culture: Tibet. Dimensions: Each 6 1/4 x 5 3/4 in. (16 x 14.5 cm). Date: early 15th century.Tsakali cards were used by itinerant teachers moving from one monastery to another in order to evoke Vajrayana Buddhist deities. When laid on the ground in the form of a mandala, as seen here, they functioned to create a fixed sacred space like that of a temple. The deities shown on these initiation cards include the Tathagata Buddhas, various bodhisattvas, fierce protectors, and the six possible realms of rebirth seen across the bottom. They probably were made by a Nepali artist for a Tibetan patron of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism.Tsakali cards were used individually to align a disciple with a deity from the vast pantheon. First, the disciple sought permission from the deity, either through a dream or under the guidance of a teacher. Vishnu (Sanskrit िष्णु Viṣṇu) is the Supreme god in the Vaishnavite tradition of Hinduism. Smarta followers of Adi Shankara, among others, venerate Vishnu as one of the five primary forms of God. The Vishnu Sahasranama declares Vishnu as Paramatma (supreme soul) and Parameshwara (supreme God). It describes Vishnu as the All-Pervading essence of all beings, the master of - and beyond - the past, present and future, one who supports, sustains and governs the Universe and originates and develops all elements within. Vishnu governs the aspect of preservation and sustenance of the universe, so he is called 'Preserver of the Universe'. In the Puranas, Vishnu is described as having the divine colour of water filled clouds, four-armed, holding a lotus, mace, conch (shankha) and chakra (wheel). Vishnu is also described in the Bhagavad Gita as having a 'Universal Form' (Vishvarupa) which is beyond the ordinary limits of human perception or imagination.

Shakyamuni Buddha, The Enlightened One, 18th century, Tashilumpo Monastery, 45 x 28 1/4 in. (114.3 x 71.76 cm), Colors and gold on sized cotton, Tibet, 18th century, This rare thanka was painted in the Tashilumpo monastery in central Tibet for a Newari patron from Nepal. From the seventeenth century on, wealthy Nepalese merchants trading with Tibet often visited the famous Tashilumpo monastery, seat of the Panchen Lamas, and commissioned thankas. Although the style of such paintings follows the contemporary Tibetan formula of symmetrically arranged deities in the upper register, the donor figures at the bottom appear as Newari nobility, painted so finely that they approach the exquisite detail of Indian miniature painting. The Nepali, in native dress, are shown engaged in various consecration ceremonies. The mount of this thanka is painted with designs imitating the imperial Chinese brocade typically used to frame thankas belonging to important monasteries; since these expensive silks

The practitioner would have read an associated text and then visualized in three dimensions the palatial structure depicted here, which is seen from above with a single gateway at its bottom. At the center, the god Chakramsavara embraces his red consort, Vajravarahi. The surrounding circle contains Cosmic Buddhas, dancing Dakinis (demi-goddesses), and the Shakyamuni Buddha, while the upper and lower registers contain protective and auspicious deities and lineage teachers.

This trio of bodhisattvas on the upper cover is paired on the lower cover with Atisha flanked by Tibetan patriarchs, relating the role of these important human figures with those of the divine realm. Portrait of Jnanatapa Attended by Lamas and Mahasiddhas ca. 1350 Eastern Tibet, Kham, Riwoche monastery This portrait was created for Riwoche monastery in eastern Tibet, a branch of Taklung monastery. The central figure and the assembled abbots are not directly named on the painting. Nonetheless, two inscriptions allow a lineage identification: the epithet Jnanatapa (heat of wisdom”) appears on the painting’s veil, a name denoting a famous Indian mahasiddha, the spiritual fathers of Tantric Buddhism. The second is the identity of presiding deity above the central figure, named as Avagarbha. The importance of these two clues is revealed by their presence in the official history of Taklung monastery, which tells that the first abbot of Riwoche monastery was an incarnation of the peerless mahasiddha Jnanatapa” and that his Tantric teacher was Avagarbha, a Bengal siddha. Goddess Tripurasundari Early 20th century Nepal Parvati, the consort of the Hindu deity Shiva, can assume many forms. Her most prolific manifestation is as the supreme goddess Durga, who was empowered by the male gods to defeat the demonic forces at large in the world. Here we see Parvati appearing in a five-faced and ten-armed form as the goddess Tripurasundari, also referred to as Purnacandi in Nepal. This form embodies the power of the goddess as the conqueror of evil. Founders and prominent masters of the Sakya order of Buddhism in Tibet are featured in this painting as part of the lineage of teachers who transmitted knowledge of their fundamental text, the Hevajra Tantra. It is part of a series of paintings made at one of the main Sakya monastic centers, which had close ties with Nepal. This Tibetan artwork includes Nepalese features, such as the delicate, decorative quality of the painting, its two-dimensionality, the exaggerated curvature of the upper eyelid, and the filling of all spaces with scrollwork.

Thanka paintings portraying the hierarchical lineage of Sakyapa monks were especially popular with monasteries of that sect. In such portrayals, one or two important personages of the lineage are usually represented as large figures in the center surrounded by smaller images of lesser stature.Twenty monks are illustrated in these two paintings, each is identified by small Tibetan gold script under or next to each lama. The thankas with their rich iconography present Buddhist teaching and dogmas, both systematically and historically from Buddha's time to the development of Tibetan variation.

Daiitoku Myōō 12th century Japan Daiitoku Myōō (Sanskrit: Yamantaka) is one of the five Great Light Kings of Esoteric Buddhism. His Sanskrit name means "one who stops the power of the King of Hell." He is shown with multiple heads, eyes, legs, and arms. Four hands hold a trident, a wheel, a sword, and a jeweled club while two hands join, with only the middle finger extended, in the mudra of restraint (konpon-in). Introduced from China by Kūkai (774-836), the five Great Light Kings became important ritual icons called upon to protect the nation during the Sutra of the Benevolent Kings Assembly, which was performed on special occasions. This drawing is almost identical in form to an image of Daiitoku Myōō that appears in an iconographic scroll of deities from the Sutra of the Benevolent Kings (Ninnōkyō) imported by Kūkai and housed at the important esoteric temple Daigoji in Kyoto. The brief description next to the image probably serves as a record of the attributes of the deity.. Daiito

The Mogao Caves, or Mogao Grottoes (Chinese: mò gāo kū), also known as the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas and Dunhuang Caves, form a system of 492 temples 25 km (15.5 miles) southeast of the center of Dunhuang, an oasis strategically located at a religious and cultural crossroads on the Silk Road, in Gansu province, China. The caves contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art spanning a period of 1,000 years. The first caves were dug out 366 AD as places of Buddhist meditation and worship. The Mogao Caves are the best known of the Chinese Buddhist grottoes and, along with Longmen Grottoes and Yungang Grottoes, are one of the three famous ancient sculptural sites of China. The caves also have famous wall paintings.
