KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- At Launch Pad 17-B, at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, workers position NASAs Dawn spacecraft to lower it toward the Delta II launch vehicle. Launch is scheduled for July 7. Dawn is the ninth mission in NASA's Discovery Program. The spacecraft will be the first to orbit two planetary bodies, asteroid Vesta and dwarf planet Ceres, during a single mission. Vesta and Ceres lie in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It is also NASAs first purely scientific mission powered by three solar electric ion propulsion engines.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - On Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, STS-132 Mission Specialists Garrett Reisman, left, and Michael Good, dressed in their orange launch-and-entry suits, practice emergency exit procedures. Evacuation from the pad's 195-foot level in the event of an emergency is made possible by seven baskets suspended from seven slidewires that extend from the fixed service structure to a landing zone 1,200 feet west of the pad. The crew is participating in a launch dress rehearsal, called the Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test, or TCDT. TCDT provides each shuttle crew and launch team the opportunity to participate in various simulated countdown activities, including equipment familiarization and emergency procedures. On the STS-132 mission, the six-member crew will deliver an Integrated Cargo Carrier, or ICC, and the Russian-built Mini-Research Module-1, or MRM-1, to the International Space Station aboard space shuttle Atlantis. S93-43113 (Nov 1993) --- Astronaut Donald A. Thomas, mission specialist, is pictured during a bailout training session at the Johnson Space Center's (JSC) Weightless Environment Test Facility (WET-F). Thomas was joined by five other NASA astronauts and a Japanese payload specialist for the training session. The crew will spend approximately two weeks aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia next year in support of the second International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-2) mission.

Coleman is in the processing of being submerged in the deep pool ofJSC's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL).Coleman was participating in a simulation of a contingency space walkin preparation for the STS-93 mission next year. The mission specialist will join four other NASA astronauts for the Space Shuttle Columbia flight, scheduled for spring. ISS029-E-039197 (4 Nov. 2011) --- Robonaut 2 -- the first dexterous humanoid robot in space is pictured in the Destiny laboratory of the International Space Station. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - On Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, STS-126 crew members head for the slidewire baskets on the 195-foot level of the fixed service structure. They have taken part in a simulated countdown in space shuttle Endeavour. The crew is at Kennedy to take part in the Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test, which includes equipment familiarization, emergency exit training and the simulated countdown. On the STS-126 mission, space shuttle Endeavour's crew will deliver equipment and supplies to the International Space Station in preparation for expansion from a three- to six-person resident crew aboard the complex. The mission also will include four spacewalks to service the stations Solar Alpha Rotary Joints. Endeavour is targeted to launch Nov. 14.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- On the 195-foot level of the fixed service structure on Launch Pad 39B, STS-116 Mission Specialist Robert Curbeam heads for the slidewire baskets. He and other crew members are practicing the emergency egress procedure to get off the pad, part of the prelaunch preparations known as terminal countdown demonstration test. The TCDT includes a simulated launch countdown and payload familiarization. The STS-116 mission is No. 20 to the International Space Station and construction flight 12A.1. The mission payload is the SPACEHAB module, the P5 integrated truss structure and other key components. Launch is scheduled for no earlier than Dec. 7.

JSC2003-E-42632 (June 2003) --- Astronaut Nancy J. Currie, wearing an advanced concept space suit, participates in a test at the Johnson Space Center to evaluate hand-in-hand work with robots. The Robonaut pictured is one of two that were used in the demonstration's task -- the assembly of an aluminum truss structure.

JSC2001-01552 (24 May 2001) --- An unidentified member of the STS-109 crew uses a device called a Sky genie to simulate rappelling from a troubled shuttle in a training session in the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). The mockup is called the Full Fuselage Trainer (FFT). This exercise trains the crewmembers for procedures to follow in egressing a troubled shuttle on the ground. STS-109 will be the 108th shuttle flight and the fourth Hubble Space Telescope (HST) servicing mission.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Engineers and technicians prepare the Project Morpheus prototype lander for a second free flight test at the north end of the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Testing of the prototype lander was performed at NASAs Johnson Space Center in Houston in preparation for tethered and free flight testing at Kennedy. Project Morpheus integrates NASAs automated landing and hazard avoidance technology, or ALHAT, with an engine that runs on liquid oxygen and methane, or green propellants, into a fully-operational lander that could deliver cargo to other planetary surfaces.The landing facility will provide the lander with the kind of field necessary for realistic testing, complete with rocks, craters and hazards to avoid. Morpheus ALHAT payload allows it to navigate to clear landing sites amidst rocks, craters and other hazards during its descent. STS-102 is the eighth construction flight to the International Space Station, with Space Shuttle Discovery carrying the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module Leonardo. S99-08361 (26 July 1999) --- Astronaut Claude Nicollier, mission specialist representing the European Space Agency(ESA), readies gear for an underwaterrehearsal of STS-103 exctravehicular activity (EVA). Nicollier and other astronauts assigned to space walk duty are in training for EVA chores they will handle when they make the third servicing visit to the Earth-orbiting Hubble Space Telescope (HST) since its deployment in April 1990.

S87-44061 (25 Sept 1987) --- Dr. Claude Nicollier, equipped with a pressurized extravehicular mobility unit (EMU), is in the process of being submerged in the 25-ft. deep pool of JSC's weightless environment training facility (WET-F) for a familiarization session. Dr. Nicollier's suit is weighted to facilitate a neutrally buoyant condition. He is assisted by two SCUBA-equipped divers. Dr. Nicollier, a Swiss scientist assigned to the STS-46 mission as a payload specialist, first came to the Johnson Space Center in July 1980. Along with Dr. Wubbo Ockels, another European Scientist, Dr. Nicollier underwent survival training and other basic astronaut-type training alongside the 1980 class of astronaut candidates. Some photos in this series show Dr. Nicollier in an extravehicular mobility unit (EMU). This is for familiarization purposes only as the scientist is not scheduled for any extravehicular activity.

Three members of the STS-102 crew hurry to the slidewire baskets for emergency egress training. The crew is at KSC for Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test activities, which include the emergency training and a simulated launch countdown. STS-102 is the eighth construction flight to the International Space Station, with Space Shuttle Discovery carrying the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module Leonardo. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. - STS-109 Mission Specialist Richard M. Linnehan gets a final fitting on his launch and entry suit two days before launch. On mission STS-109, the seven-member crew will capture the Hubble Space Telescope using the Shuttle's robotic arm and secure it on a workstand in Columbia's payload bay. Four mission specialists will perform five scheduled spacewalks to complete system upgrades to the telescope. More durable solar arrays, a large gyroscopic assembly to help point the telescope properly, a new telescope power control unit, and a cooling system to restore the use of a key infrared camera and spectrometer unit, which has been dormant since 1999, will all be installed. In addition, the telescopes view of the Universe will be improved with the addition of the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), which replaces the Faint Object Camera, the last of Hubble's original instruments. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Workers at Astrotech Space Operations in Titusville, Fla., check control panels during fueling of the Deep Impact spacecraft. Scheduled for liftoff Jan. 12, Deep Impact will probe beneath the surface of Comet Tempel 1 on July 4, 2005, when the comet is 83 million miles from Earth, and reveal the secrets of its interior. After releasing a 3- by 3-foot projectile to crash onto the surface, Deep Impacts flyby spacecraft will collect pictures and data of how the crater forms, measuring the craters depth and diameter, as well as the composition of the interior of the crater and any material thrown out, and determining the changes in natural outgassing produced by the impact. It will send the data back to Earth through the antennas of the Deep Space Network. Deep Impact is a NASA Discovery mission.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - "Astronauts" were safely and successfully recovered from a "downed" Space Shuttle in a Mode VII contingency simulation led by Don Hammel, NASA Landing and Recovery Director. KSC Fire/Rescue and Emergency Medical workers, along with Johnson Space Center and Patrick Air Force Base personnel, participated in the drill. Mode simulations are held periodically at KSC to ensure contingency response forces are well prepared to respond to a wide variety of potential emergency situations.
