Landscape with a Battle between Two Rams ca. 1640 Jan Miel Flemish This animated scene stands in opposition to the grand, classical tradition represented by Poussin, Claude, and Bourdon. The picture is ascribed to Jan Miel, who moved to Rome in the 1630s. He specialized in scenes of contemporary life referred to as bambocciate, after the nickname of the creator of the genre, Pieter van Laer. Although Miel's work stands in contrast to the premise of classical landscapes, he is known to have collaborated with Gaspard Dughet and it has been suggested that the landscape in this picture was painted by Dughet with the figures added by Miel.. Date: probably ca. 1810.Hautbois Common lies near the villages of Great Hautbois and Coltishall, some eight miles northeast of Crome's native Norwich. Although the motif was one that he must have seen, the composition also strongly suggests the influence of the seventeenth-century Dutch painter Meyndert Hobbema. It is very likely that this work was exhibited at the Norwich Society of Artists in 1810 as Scene on Hautbois Common, near Coltishall, Norfolk. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
