International trade with the Hellenistic world and India as well as invasions into Gandhara by the Scythians, Parthians, and Kushans brought many new stylistic idioms that shaped the stylistic vocabulary of these objects. Similar dishes were found in the Gandharan city of Sirkap (Taxila) in contexts that suggest they were used for domestic rituals, perhaps to ensure a positive afterlife. Eagle Transformation Figure 10th-6th century B.C. Olmec This small, carved sculpture in a whitish greenstone known as albite represents a standing figure bearing both human and avian attributes. The composition is dominated by the figures head which occupies the upper half, while the rotund torso with incised umbilicus and limbs are minimally indicated below. The large, spherical eyes are separated by a contoured crest that projects upward above a small nose. The figures mouth is an avian beak, partially open as if mid-vocalization. A small beard protrudes from the lower jaw, and similar hairlike incisions begin at the hairline and terminate in an overlapping pattern that might suggest a combination of hair and feathers. Humanlike ears contain tiny drilled holes which may have supported adornments. Such figures with protruding chests and arms bent at the elbow, drawn up close to the body, have been interpreted as human figures with non-standard bodies as a result of skeletal dysplasi

Terracotta statuette of a siren ca. 550-500 B.C. Greek Sirens are mythical creatures famous in antiquity for their song, which lured sailors to their death. Sanctuaries to the sirens are known to have existed in parts of South Italy and Sicily, as the geographer Strabo and other ancient writers tell us. Fragment of a bowl with a frieze of bulls in relief ca. 3300-2900 B.C. This fragment of a bowl is decorated with a procession of bulls moving to the right, although only one complete animal survives. Typical of the Late Uruk and Jemdet Nasr periods, the body of the animal is carved in low relief while its head, turned to face the viewer, is fully three-dimensional. Such extraordinary sculpture was developed at the end of the fourth millennium B.C., when cities emerged across Mesopotamia. Vessels of this type have been frequently found in palaces or religious structures, which suggests that they had a special function in such settings. After cylinder seals, they are the most important source of pictorial information for the period. The pictures are drawn from the natural realm, often portraying, as here, an ordered world of domesticated animals or, alternatively, the threat of potentially hostile creatures such as the lion.. Greek, Melian Phrixos carried over the sea by a ramPhrixos and his sister, Helle, were threatened with death by their stepmother, the wife of King Athamas who ruled part of Thessaly. They escaped thanks to a ram with a golden fleece. It was carrying them to Kolchis, the region east of the Black Sea, when Helle drowned in the straits connecting the Sea of Marmara with the Aegean Sea; the straits became known as the Hellespont. Plaque with a nude female between two bearded males wearing kilts. Culture: Babylonian. Dimensions: 3 7/8 x 3 7/8 in. (9.7 x 9.7 cm). Date: ca. 2000-1600 B.C..This openwork bronze stands out for its particularly detailed workmanship. The piece includes three symmetrically arranged figures - a nude female centrally placed and flanked by two bearded males wearing fringed kilts. The males stand, legs askew, upon a lower bracket, and all three figures support an upper bracket with raised arms. The upper bracket includes two front-facing lions (known elsewhere as symbols of the goddess Inanna/Ishtar). Musculature, facial features, locks of hair, and jewelry are all carefully depicted; both the fronts and the backs of the figures are modeled. Here, unusually, both male figures have curly hair and beards.The exact function of early second millennium B.C. openwork bronzes is not known. Cords, straps, or fabric were likely fed through slots in the plaque, and the rollers may have been used as

Palm of a Ceremonial Fan. Dimensions: Height: 4 3/4 in. (12 cm). Date: A.D. 1st-2nd century.This palm (joining piece) of a ceremonial fan depicts a royal baldachin atop an umbel, the flower section of the papyrus plant. On the back of the palm are sockets for three ostrich plumes, and the lower end is made to fit onto a long staff. Goddesses holding feathered fans flank the pharaoh seated inside the baldachin. One of the royal cartouches appearing just below the cornice could be a poor version of one of the names of the Middle Kingdom pharaoh Amenemhat III. His pyramid complex at Hawara was a favorite site for burials in Roman times, and many mummies with panel portraits were found there. The man reclining at the far right raises a wine jug, while the female, seated at the front edge of the couch, once played a lyre. Two child Erotes join the young couple and all participants are crowned with ivy leaves and wreaths. Exceptional for its three-dimensionality, ornate style and preservation of polychromy, this group visualizes the semantic overlap in Greek thought and art between the bridal and the death kline and the role of lyre music as expression of marital love.. Head from a Figure with a Beaded Headdress 12th-early 13th century Although three-dimensional figurative sculptures were made from the beginnings of Islamic art, this head, perhaps part of a full-sized figure, represents a rare example of such sculpture from the Seljuq period. Carved in stone, this head features an enigmatic smile that sets it apart from the average figural production of this period, much of which was made of stucco and with a more standardized and solemn expression. The maker of this object was clearly highly skilled, as evidenced by the naturalistic depiction of its Central Asian face, the stylized hair locks that form an ornament, and the elaborately jeweled headdress.. Plaque in the form of a sphinx ca. 8th century B.C. Hammered from single sheets of bronze, these sphinxes look outward toward the viewer. Their striding poses mirror each other and suggest that they may once have been displayed approaching each other. While many of the incised details are the same, differences such as the position of the hair swirl on the chest indicate that two separate craftspeople may have been responsible for the decorative work. The supernatural character of the sphinx, a composite creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion, is an ancient royal symbol of Egypt. Here the sphinx is further enhanced with the addition of wings, an ancient Near Eastern innovation.The Levant and inland Syria were conquered in the eighth century B.C. by the Assyrian kings. Date: 2000-1750 B.C..This remarkable object is the oldest bronze object in the Museum's Indian collections, and is a rare survivor of the early bronze culture associated with the late Harappan civilization shared across northern India and the Indus Valley (Pakistan) in the second millennium B.C. Two humped ('Brahman') bulls support a platform on which is a woman is kneeling. Her hands rest on the bulls' humps. The ensemble is on a rectangular platform, which has been separately cast. The woman has a slender physique, pointed breasts, and hair that extends to her shoulders. She wears a small circular crown-like fitting atop her head, has deep eye sockets and an incised mouth. Elephant tusks were carved into small decorative objects such as cosmetic boxes and plaques used to adorn wooden furniture. Gold foil, paint, and semiprecious stone and glass inlay embellishments enlivened these magnificent works of art.
