Cuneiform tablet: Late Babylonian grammatical text ca. late 1st millennium B.C. The invention of writing in approximately 3300 B.C. was one of many developments in administrative technology--including the use of geometric tokens for counting and cylinder seals to guarantee transactions--that accompanied the growth of the first cities and states in southern Mesopotamia. Proto-cuneiform is the name given to the earliest form of writing--pictograms that were drawn on clay tablets. Gradually, the pictograms became abstracted into cuneiform (Latin, "wedge-shaped") signs that were impressed rather than drawn. At its greatest extent, cuneiform writing was used from the Mediterranean coast of Syria to western Iran and from Hittite Anatolia to southern Mesopotamia. It was adapted to write at least fifteen different languages. This papyrus is an abridged version of the Amduat, a series of texts and pictures describing the twelve-hour nightly voyage of the sun god through the afterlife. During his journey, the god faces many dangers and appears in a series of manifestations that both aid and underscore his triumph over the forces of evil and chaos. By identifying with the sun god through the magical means found in this papyrus, the deceased owner was able to ward off the forces that threatened his or her own existence in the afterlife. Cuneiform tablet: quittance for a loan in silver ca. 20th-19th century B.C. Old Assyrian Trading Colony Kültepe, the ancient city of Kanesh, was part of the network of trading settlements established in central Anatolia by merchants from Ashur (in Assyria in northern Mesopotamia) in the early second millennium B.C. Travelling long distances, and often living separately from their families, these merchants traded vast quantities of goods, primarily tin and textiles, for Anatolian copper and other materials. Although the merchants adopted many aspects of local Anatolian life, they brought with them Mesopotamian tools used to record transactions: cuneiform writing, clay tablets and envelopes, and cylinder seals. Using a simplified version of the elaborate cuneiform writing system, merchants tracked loans as well as business deals and disputes, and sent letters to families and business partners back in Ashur. At Kültepe, thousands of these texts stored in household archives were preserved

Inscribed brick: dedicatory inscription of Adad-shuma-usur ca. 1216-1187 B.C. Kassite Maintenance of temples and their cults was a primary responsibility of ancient Near Eastern rulers, requiring the investment of significant resources. Among the most important religious complexes was the Ekur of Nippur, the residence of the chief god Enlil. Rulers, beginning at least in the mid third millennium B.C. and continuing through the first millennium B.C., left behind bricks stamped with their inscriptions as records of their building works. Buried within the foundations of a building, stamped bricks preserved the memory of a ruler for a future builder to discover.This partially broken brick was stamped with the inscription of Adad-shuma-usur, a ruler of the Kassite period. Typical for the rulers of this period, the inscription is written in the long-dead Sumerian language and uses archaizing cuneiform signs. A Babylonian treatise on astronomy. This tablet is inscribed with classified lists of the principal stars and constellations, heliacal risings and settings, culminations in the south, etc. Although this is a fairly late text (about the sixth century B.C.) much of this astronomical work was based on observations dating from the time of Hammurabi, about twelve centuries earlier.

The text is typical of the Seleucid period, where the words are written in Sumerian but with a large number of lines accompanied by an Akkadian translation. Sumerian was the language spoken in southern Mesopotamia until around 2000 B.C., while Akkadian had probably ceased to be a spoken language by the time this tablet was written, having been replaced by Aramaic and Greek throughout much of the Near East. However, both Sumerian and Akkadian continued to be written in cuneiform until the early centuries A.D. by learned scribes.This tablet contains a lament by Inanna, the Sumerian goddess of fertility, over the destruction of her cities and shrines, and contrasts her present humiliation with her previous power. A.D. 14-37), Gaius Caligula (r. A.D. 37-41), or Claudius (r. A.D. 41-54). The fragment also contains another Roman name, Quintus Sergius, and some scholars have tried to identify this man as the famous Roman governor of Cyprus, Sergius Paulus, who befriended St. Paul.
