Date: 1908.Burroughs modeled this bust of John La Farge (1835-1910) when the distinguished artist was seventy-three years old, toward the end of his extended career. In contrast to the optimistic dandy who appears in La Farge's 1859 self-portrait (34.134), Burroughs presented him without apology as a pensive and melancholic elder. William Bewley Duncan 1879 Olin Levi Warner American William Bewley Duncan probably knew Warner through their mutual association with the art dealer and decorator Daniel Cottier, since Duncan was an illustrator for Cottier and Company. This medallion contains the essential elements of Warners mature portrait-relief style: circular shape, distinct outlining of form, strong modeling, and freely rendered inscription. Warner seldom strayed from the circular relief format, in part a result of his admiration for the portrait medallions of the early-nineteenth-century French sculptor David dAngers. Within the round field, Duncan is posed facing right, the head sharply truncated at the neck, its underside in deep shadow. Washington Allston 1843-44; carved 1843-44 Edward Augustus Brackett American Born in South Carolina, Washington Allston (1779-1843) spent his early career largely abroad and earned widespread admiration, in both America and Europe, for his ambitious history paintings and evocative landscapes. After settling in Boston in 1818, he mentored local artists, including Brackett, a self-taught portrait sculptor. When Allston died in July 1843, his family commissioned a likeness from Brackett. Although the sculptor took a death mask, he smoothed and softened the effects of age in the final portrait bust. Brackett went on to model portraits of such local luminaries as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Charles Sumner.. Washington Allston. John Paul Jones (1747-1792) After a model by Jean Antoine Houdon French 1903, after a model of 1781 John Paul Jones, the Scottish-born hero of the American War of Independence, was celebrated in France for his cross-channel exploits against the powerful British navy. In 1780, Houdon was commissioned to make Jones's bust by the Loge des Neuf Soeurs, the Parisian Masonic lodge named after the Muses, to which both men belonged (he had also just produced the busts of two other Lodge members, Franklin 72.6 and Voltaire 1972.61). Unlike so many of Houdon's subjects, who appear to be interacting with their immediate company, Jones's knitted brow and narrowed gaze give the impression of a seaman appraising some threat on the distant horizon.The likeness of the handsome but temperamental Jones, shown in his naval uniform with his natural hair brushed tightly back and tied, was much appreciated by the sitter, who ordered numerous plaster copies for his friends and associates. . Giambologna may have made this small self-portrait in 1599, when the pope knighted him in the Order of Christ. The insignia, a Greek cross, is displayed on his chest. This busts modest dimensions make it perfectly suited for a cabinet of curiosities; it could be held by hand and studiously admired from all sides.
