The Big Hole, Kimberley, South Africa - Kimberley, famous diamond centre of South Africa, has a unique tourist attraction in the form of a disused diamond mine, popularly known as "The Big Hole".Here the early diggers, working in the open with primitive equipment, excavated a gigantic crater 1,500 feet across and 1000 feet deep. Modern mining methods later extended the depth of the Big Hole to 4,000 feet, which during its life time yielded 15 million carats of diamonds valued at over £47,000,000. One of the four large fishing boats-presumed to be Japanese-now of our North-West coast. The first picture to reach Perth, it shows the ship at anchor about 45 miles west-north-west of North-West Cape. The ships were first sighted last Saturday by passengers and crew a boat the Charon. A Department of Navy representative conferred with the ship's master on its arrival a Fremantle and the same day a Nepture from Pearce flew up the coast and sighted the ships. March 11, 1954.

There were 545 Australian wives and their 220 children aboard.They were called the GI Brides - 10,000 of them - wooed and won by an army of American servicemen at a time when a world torn by war and the suffering and heartbreak it brought had little time for love. "Royal Sovereign" Returns From Russia - The Hammer and Sickle flag of Soviet Russia flies from the fantail of the old British battleship "Royal Sovereign," as the ship steams up the Firth of Forth, Scotland, Feb. 4.
