Meadow with Cows by the Water. A vast polder, cows in the meadow and - in the background - a windmill: these have been the hallmarks of the Dutch countryside since the 17th century. Such landscapes with cows near a ditch were Willem Maris speciality. He especially lavished attention on the atmosphere; and, indeed, the warmth of a summer day is almost palpable in this painting.

In Pines Along the Shore, painted in the south of France overlooking the Mediterranean, Cross weaves and layers separate brushstrokes, building his paint surface in a tapestry-like fashion from cool tones on the pine grove floor to brilliant foliage at the water's edge to softer hues in the sky and mountains beyond. An Apple, Grapes and a Hazelnut on a Mossy Bank 1830-64 William Henry Hunt British Hunt worked mainly as a watercolorist, painting genre subjects and still-lives. The latter characteristically show fruits, nuts, and natural elements such as birds' nests presented with a sense of heightened realism. This small, beautiful example centers on an apple with a distinctive flaw, a cluster of grapes, and hazelnut still clad in its papery outer skin, all lying near a mossy bank. The artist was known for his uncanny ability to render the bloom on fruit, seen here on the grapes, achieved with tiny dots of watercolor applied over a matt layer of Chinese white.
