Scenes from the Story of the Argonauts Biagio d'Antonio In this and its companion panel, the story of Jason and the Argonauts unfolds in a continuous narrative. In the first panel, Jason is charged by King Pelias to retrieve the Golden Fleece. Jason then mounts his horse and consults the centaur Chiron on Mount Pelion together with Hercules and Orpheus. In the distance is Jason's ship, the Argo.In this panel, King Aëetes and his daughters Medea and Chalciope meet Jason and his companions. At center, Jason plows the grove of Ares, where the Golden Fleece is guarded, while Orpheus lulls the dragon to sleep so that Jason may steal the fleece. At right, the king sends his sons off to capture the fleeing Jason and Medea. For more information about these two paintings, including a complete account of the narrative, visit metmuseum.org.The engaged moldings of the panel are original; the pictures were probably installed as the backrests of two benches or were framed in the wainscoting of a roo

Forest Scene from the Tale of Nastagio degli Onesti, in Boccaccio's "Decameron" Davide di Tommaso Bigordi, aka Davide Ghirlandaio (Italian, Florentine, 1452-1525). Forest Scene from the Tale of Nastagio degli Onesti, in Boccaccio's "Decameron," after 1483. Tempera on wood panel, 27 1/2 x 53 in. (69.9 x 134.6 cm). In Renaissance Italy, idealized paintings of landscapes were defined by single-point perspective, a compositional device that favored a human view of the world over traditional religious formats. Here, Davide Ghirlandaio organizes his painting around a female nude fleeing amid systematically receding trees. The artist manipulates the Tuscan country-side to create a nearly symmetrical setting for a cautionary tale from Boccaccios Decameron (1348-51). The story tells of a reluctant bride who is hunted and slaughtered by the knight she has rejected, and then suffers the same fate each week as a ghost. The painter uses native umbrella pines to frame the characters in this human

Despite the actual location of Caria in Asia Minor, in this tapestry Artemisia's troops use a ruined fortress appropriate to 17th century France as a staging ground for their performance of a 'mimic war.' Mounted archers and swordsmen practice techniques while infantrymen storm the fortress by bridge and moat. The troop's vigorous poses and rearing horses suggest an energetic battle. Plate (piatto): The story of Aeneas 1532 Francesco Xanto Avelli da Rovigo Italian This plate formed part of one of the largest majolica services ever made, commissioned by Piero Maria Pucci (1467-1547), a member of a prominent Florentine family whose coat of arms features the head of a Black man in profile, a reference to their original surname, Saracini (meaning "Saracens"). Similar images had frequently appeared in European heraldry since the thirteenth century. Rooted in the subjugation of Muslims and peoples of Arab and African descent, this imagery often signified triumph in the Crusades or involvement in the slave trade. Here, a white band tied around the mans head is inscribed with three Ts, an acronym for the Pucci family motto: Tempore tempora tempera (Time alleviates all troubles). Thirty-seven pieces from the maiolica service survive (including four in the Lehman Collection: see also 1975.1.1134; 1975.1.1135; 1975.1.1137), all painted in Urbino by the celebrated maiolica p

Memorial painting. Culture: American. Dimensions: 28 x 32 3/8 in. (71.1 x 82.2 cm). Maker: Sally Miller. Date: 1811.The Litchfield Female Academy (1792-1833), where this picture was made, was one of the few schools that provided both academic and ornamental educations for young American women. Parents sent their girls to Litchfield expecting them to return home knowing English grammar, arithmetic, history, geography, and religion. But any ladies' academy, no matter how progressive, was still expected to provide instruction in needlework, music, and painting. This painted silk mourning picture is one of eight known from the Litchfield Female Academy. All are almost identical in size, composition, images, and coloring. The painted faces in all eight appear to be by one artist, possibly Flora Catlin, an art teacher at the school from 1815 to 1831. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
