Mosaic glass fragment. The small green glass fragment consists of several bright circles with green center and light green border. With this piece, manufacturing technology is well recognizable: it is a section through a rod of several wavy glass tubes (from the inside to the outside dark green, white, light green) in dark green glass. In Roman times you used colored, ornamented glass for vessels, mosaics , Wall decorations and furniture ornaments. For the production differently colored glasses were formed into tubes and rods. These were compressed and heated, causing a long bar. The glass sliced now had a wide variety of amorphous or floral patterns.

Gaming Piece possibly 8th-12th century The dot-in-circle motif recalls designs presumed to be of magical significance, most likely an abstract eye to ward off the evil-eye, which serves an apotropaic function. Easily reproduced with a tool and visible in many cultures and times, this symbol may have lost its meaning, and become simply a decorative pattern, or may have one that we have not yet discovered.. Celt before 16th century Maya () Greenstone axe heads, commonly known as “celts,” were some of the most important works of art across ancient Mesoamerica and Central America. Created from jadeite mined from the Motagua River Valley of southern Guatemala, or using local green stones from highland Mexico, celts were first created by the Olmec peoples of the Gulf Coast after 1000 B.C. The Olmec conceived of green celts as sprouts of maize and thus “planted” celts in dedicatory offerings, activating ceremonial spaces and perpetuating agricultural fertility. For the later Maya peoples, celts also served as dedicatory materials, but more so as adornments for the royal bodies of kings and queens. Often the celts would be thinned into celt-shaped plaques, strung together in pairs and triads in order to create belt assemblages that would have clinked with the sound of jades striking one another. Tombs from the Classic Period (ca. AD 250-900) contain celts of jadeite and various greenstones fro

Ring probably 19th century Chinese This collection of largely ethnographic jewelry includes examples from cultures in South America, North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa and dates from the Pre-Columbian period to the twentieth century. Owned by renowned art collector and fashion enthusiast Muriel Kallis Newman, the collection represents her knowledge and appreciation of a wide range of jewelry design and making traditions. Numerous items in her collection are composite artifacts made from various cultures and time periods reappropriated as modern jewelry creations by or for Muriel. Fragment of a vessel. A low curvature of the glass fragment allows the assignment to a vessel, possibly a shell. The violet ground is crossed by fine white lines, which form a grid, the honeycomb resembles. In the spaces are flowers consisting of a yellow point to lay the white-rimmed blue dots as petals. Therefore, more yellow points on a violet reason can be seen on a circular line. For the production, different colored glasses were shaped to tubes and rods. These were compressed and heated, causing a long bar. The glass sliced now had different amorphous or floral patterns. Thereafter, several of these platelets were folded together, heated again and pressed into the vascular shape. Burry for the elaborate manufacturing process and its fragility was one of the luxury articles of antiquity.

Gaming Piece possibly 8th-12th century Caliphal decrees prohibited the playing of chess (the pieces of which are customarily figural) for iconoclastic reasons as early as the eighth century. It is likely that chess pieces of the abstract type, such as this one, replaced the figural ones in order to circumvent those decrees. The dot-in-circle motif recalls designs presumed to be of magical significance, most likely an abstract eye to ward off the evil-eye, which serves an apotropaic function. Easily reproduced with a tool and visible in many cultures and times, this symbol may have lost its meaning, and become simply a decorative pattern, or may have one that we have not yet discovered.. Scarab ca. 1981-1640 B.C. Middle Kingdom This scarab was made out of amethyst, a semi-precious stone. Its flat underside is undecorated, which is often the case for scarabs in semi-precious stones. Possibly the shape and material of such scarabs might have been regarded as providing enough magical power without added text or images, though an additional inscribed gold plate might have originally covered the scarabs base. The scarab beetles habit of rolling large dung balls across the ground was associated by the ancient Egyptians with the travel of the sun. They also thought that this beetle self-generated spontaneously, and both aspects made the scarab a potent symbol of creation and regeneration.. Scarab. ca. 1981-1640 B.C.. Amethyst. Middle Kingdom. Bead 8th-13th century This object was excavated at Nishapur.Nishapur was a vital city in the early and middle Islamic periods, located along one of the main trajectories that connected Iran and West Asia Islamic lands with Central Asia and China. These itineraries are often referred to by the term Silk routes’ but were in fact crucial to the movement of constellations of materials and objects, as well as people and ideas. The diverse population of Nishapur and its surroundings, from the better-researched elite groups of merchants, land-owning aristocracy, and literates, to the less-known artisans, farmers, miners, and servants, were instrumental in adapting global cultural trends to create their own distinctive visual languages. This is seen in the material remains of everyday life in medieval Nishapur - from pots and pans to lighting devices, inkwells, textiles and trimmings, jewelry, games and toys, talismanic devices, weapons, coins, and architectural fragments.Nishapur lost its po
