Madonna Adoring the Sleeping Child. Artist: Giovanni Bellini (Italian, Venice, active by 1459-died 1516 Venice). Dimensions: 28 1/2 x 18 1/4 in. (72.4 x 46.4 cm). Date: early 1460s.This is an important early work by Giovanni Bellini, the greatest painter of fifteenth-century Venice and one of the key figures of European painting. Datable to the mid-1460s, its hard, linear quality is indebted to the example of Bellini's brother-in-law, Andrea Mantegna, as well as to the sculpture of Donatello, which Bellini studied in Padua. The sleeping child is a reminder of Christ's death and sacrifice. The picture has suffered from a strong, abrasive cleaning. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The Holy Family with the Young Saint John the Baptist ca. 1528 Andrea del Sarto (Andrea d'Agnolo) Italian With this grandly solemn composition, Sarto demonstrated that he was, indeed, "the painter without defects," as Giorgio Vasari had deemed him. His figures are masterfully drawn, beautifully colored, and composed with an air of nobility. Giovanni Borgherini commissioned the picture at a time when Florence, having freed itself of Medici dominance, declared itself a republic. The young John the Baptistpatron saint of Florencepasses the orb to Christ, indicating him as sole ruler of the city. But in 1532 the Medici family was reinstated violently and permanently as its rulers. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #5076. Copy after Botticelli Julian Alden Weir American Weir likely made this watercolor copy after Botticellis painting of the same name (ca. 1470-75; Musée du Louvre, Paris) when he was studying in Paris in the 1870s. As a student of the École des Beaux-Arts, he would have been encouraged to study the works of the old masters at the Louvre. Much celebrated today, Botticellis reputation was undergoing a revival in the mid-nineteenth century when he was "rediscovered" by British critic and painter John Ruskin (1819-1900) and the Pre-Raphaelites. Critic Walter Pater (1839-1894) wrote a glowing essay about Botticelli in 1870, describing him as "a poetical painter" who blends "the charm of story and sentiment."

The Rest on the Flight into Egypt ca. 1512-15 Gerard David Netherlandish This composition presents the Flight into Egypt as a continuous narrative. In a tiny background scene the Holy Family emerges from the forest, en route to the contemporary Netherlandish town at the left. In the foreground Mary nurses the Child in a moment of repose on their arduous journey, which the viewer is visually meant to follow. David achieved in this painting a remarkable balance of color and a serene sense of light and atmosphere. His awareness of Italian Renaissance conventions is evident in the pyramidal motif of the Virgin and Child and his use of chiaroscuro to convey the volume of the figures.. Virgin and Child in a Landscape, c. 1492-98, possibly Master of the Madonna Grog; Artist: possibly Aert van den Bossche; Artist: formerly Master of the Embroidered Foliage, Netherlandish, active 1480-1500, 41 1/4 x 34 1/4 in. (104.78 x 87 cm) (panel)53 1/2 x 34 3/16 in. (135.89 x 86.84 cm) (outer frame), Oil on panel, Netherlands, 15th-16th century, This painting is an altarpiece, a devotional image used in a Christian church, and many of the details are religious symbols. The walled garden, for instance, refers to the garden in the Bibles Song of Songs and is associated with the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. The flowering plants also refer to Mary: the blue iris to her sorrows, the violets to her humility, and the strawberry plant to her righteousness. The peacock on the gate may signify paradise while the stags represent the human soul and piety.

Madonna and Child with Angels. Artist: Bernardino da Genoa (Italian, Genoese, active in 1515). Dimensions: 29 3/8 x 22 5/8 in. (74.6 x 57.5 cm). Date: 1515.Although the picture is signed and dated, the identity of the artist is not known. In the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries a number of Lombard artists moved to Genoa. One such artist was Bernardino Fasola, and it is possible that he is the author of this picture. The audaciously foreshortened figure of the Christ Child recalls the work of the Milanese Bramantino. The goldfinch is a common symbol of Christ's Passion. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

(43.8 x 33 cm).In his Schilder-Boeck (Book on Picturing) of 1604 Karel van Mander wrote about Jan Gossart: " . when in the service of the marquis de Veere, Mabuse Gossart painted an image of Mary in which the face was painted after the marquis' wife and the little child after her child . " This painting may be a replica of Gossart's lost original portrait of Anna van Bergen, the wife of Adolf of Burgundy, marquis de Veere, and their son, Hendrik, in the guise of the Virgin and Child. As such, Anna aspired to emulate the standard of ideal virtue and motherhood exemplified by the Virgin. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Virgin and Child ca. 1620 Anthony van Dyck Flemish At least eight versions of this tender image came out of Van Dycks workshop, and this one is at once the finest and least finished example. The deftly fluid brushstrokes loosely follow an incised underdrawing, which must have been traced from a preparatory drawing. Van Dyck would have kept this panel in his studio as a model for more finished paintings by himself and by assistants.. Virgin and Child. Virgin and Child with Two Saints (recto); Fragmentary Design of a Pietà (verso) 1515-20 Domenico Puligo Italian Dating from 1515-20, this rare, recently rediscovered work is one of the most accomplished surviving drawings by this artist. Less than 30 extant drawings by Puligo are known today, and this the only surviving study that can be securely connected to the design of one of Puligo's paintings. Born in Florence, Puligo formed part of the first generation of Florentine Mannerist painters, being closely influenced by Andrea del Sarto, his intimate friend and elder by six years, as well as by the young Jacopo Pontormo. As is seen here, Puligo used a stick of hard red chalk to draw with a dazzling confidence and boldness of mark. He quickly traced the contours of the figures, working them over with great movement and angular breaks. In the areas of intermediate shadows, he used patches of parallel-hatching and cross-hatching, almost using the red chalk as if it were a pen, explointing

Virgin and Child with Angels ca. 1518 Bernard van Orley Netherlandish Van Orley probably painted this refined and intimate picture of the Virgin and Child about the time of his appointment in 1518 as official painter to Margaret of Austria, regent of the Netherlands. A courtly Madonna of Humility, the Virgin wears a luxurious fur-trimmed dress and is seated on the ground in the enclosed but spacious garden of her palace. She is accompanied by two singing angels, who are echoed by grisaille angels in heaven. The distant background testifies to the painters awareness of the developing landscape genre, and the elaborately ornamented fountain incorporates Italian Renaissance decorative motifs.. Saints John the Evangelist and Mary Magdalene ca. 1335-45 Italian, Neapolitan Follower of Giotto This painting, together with a panel portraying the Virgin and the Dead Christ (National Gallery, London), originally formed a diptych (two panels hinged together that could be opened and closed). The painting illustrates the formative influence that the Florentine master Giotto, a pivotal figure in Western art, had in Naples during his activity there from 1328 to 1332. The diptych was likely painted by a member of Giottos workshop in Naples, who was active on the frescoes in the Church of Santa Chiara. Giotto's Neapolitan workshop may have continued to operate after he returned to Florence in 1333. The monumentality of the figures, which protrude outside the painted framework, together with their expressive gestures of grief, intensify the dramatic quality of this work, which was probably made for private devotion. The diptych may have been commissioned by Queen Sancia of Naples (1286-134
