Stilleven, Léopold Flameng, After Abraham van Beyeren, 1841 - 1887 print paper etching foodstuffs; still life of foodstuffsThe Entombment ca. 1654 Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) Dutch The startling difference between this impression and the impression of the first state (20.46.17) has less to do with the many hatched lines Rembrandt added to the composition in the second state than with the veil of ink he left on the copperplate as it was printed. This ink turns the previously brightly lit scene into a dark one in which only the faces and hands of the central figures are illuminated. By initially leaving this tone on the copperplate and wiping away the ink only where he wanted to leave touches of light, Rembrandt printed both the etched lines and the layer of ink left on the surface. As a result of this exceptional painting of the plate before printing, each impression Rembrandt pulled was unique.. The Entombment. Long before Whistler conceived of the portrait of his mother, his most important early models were his half-sister, Deborah Haden, and her family. Deborah was married to the physician, print collector, and amateur artist Francis Seymour Haden, and they had three children, Annie, Seymour, and Arthur. During one visit in 1859, Whistler created ambitious but personal depictions of the family, including the multifigure The Music Room (1917.444), which portrays the couple along with Hadenís medical partner, James Traer, as deeply absorbed in their respective activities. Meanwhile, the severe profile of Deborah in Reading by Lamplight anticipates Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1.. Etching and drypoint, with foul biting, in black on cream laid paper . They are in the Haden home on 62 Sloane Street in Chelsea. The two printmakers were friends since their student days in Metz. Boilvin is gently satirical in his portrayal, making a childlike drawing the product of Rajon's intense concentration. Following Rajon's untimely death in 1888, the portrait acquired an added poignancy and greater public exposure in the 1890s. It was included in the large exhibition of contemporary etching at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1896 and two years later, the French monthly journal "L'Estampe et L'Affiche" offered impressoins to its readers..
