The Farm at Les Collettes, Cagnes 1908-14 Auguste Renoir French In 1907, Renoir purchased the estate of Les Collettes at Cagnes on the Mediterranean near Nice. He moved there in autumn 1908. The estate, with its picturesque farmhouse, its groves of olive and orange trees, and the views it afforded of the hilly countryside, provided the artist with major motifs for his late landscapes. This painting, executed in a fluid manner and suffused by the bright light of southern France, is one of several representations of the farm framed by olive trees painted between 1908 and 1914. Canal in Autumn (Gisors), 1913. Henri Le Sidaner (French, 1862-1939). Oil on canvas; unframed: 53.3 x 63.5 cm (21 x 25 in.). This painting depicts a canal in Gisors, a commune in Normandy, about 40 miles northwest of Paris on the river Epte. Le Sidaner painted this work in a Divisionist technique of applying pure color in large, broken strokes, often separated by areas of white or gray. Unlike the Impressionists, Le Sidaner preferred a restrained palette of delicately nuanced tones that evoke a mood of quiet mystery. His views of old canals, typically portrayed in a crepuscular or nocturnal light, and completely absent of figures, allude to the passage of time and a timeless eternity that exceeds the human life span.

Date: 1899.Beginning in 1884, Homer made many winter visits to tropical locations and watercolor became his preferred medium while traveling. In contrast to his weighty and carefully considered Cullercoats watercolors, his tropical pictures were lighter in handling and less formal in composition. In late 1885 and early 1886, he went to Florida, painting in Tampa and Key West. He returned in 1890, staying in the fishing community of Enterprise on the St. Johns River and painting watercolors notable for their fluid washes and delicate color harmonies. During the winter of 1898-99, Homer was once again in the Bahamas. In one of the most productive periods of his later years, he created at least twenty-five watercolors, distinguished from those of 1884-85 by even brighter light, more saturated colors, broader stroke
