Six Putti Dancing Around a Globe and a Palm from a set of the Giochi di Putti ca. 1635 Design attributed to Giovanni da Udine (Giovanni dei Ricamatori) Italian This tapestry was once part of an eight-piece set representing Giochi di Putti, or Cherubs Games. Tommaso Vincidor painted their cartoons (the full-size models copied by the weavers) in Brussels.Unfortunately, Leos Brussels-woven, sixteenth-century tapestry set does not survive, but multiple copies were made, including these seventeenth-century tapestries attributed to Flemish weavers working in Rome in the newly established tapestry workshop funded by the Barberini family. Venus and Adonis ( ) with the Duck Hunt Made 1590-1610 Flanders. Based on the 10th book of Ovidís Metamorphoses, this scene may depict the goddess Venus and the hunter Adonis at the moment in which she warns him about the dangers of hunting. Ignoring her warning, Adonis is later killed by a boar. In the background, men in contemporary dress conduct a hunt, a popular pastime of the privileged elite. The border of the tapestry displays an array of allegorical, biblical, and mythological scenes and figures. Overall the composition gives the impression of receding space, which is characteristic of late-16th- and early-17th-century Flemish production.. Embroidered Sampler ca. 1792 Patty Coggeshall American Martha Coggeshall (nicknamed Patty) was the third of five daughters born to William (1719-1796) and Margaret Munro (1744-1809) Coggeshall of Bristol. Both Patty and her sister Polly are thought to have attended a school run by Anne Bowman Usher (1723-1793), which was in existence from about 1774 to 1793. Highly respected, the school attracted day students from prosperous Bristol families, as well as children of the wealthiest Providence families, who were sent to board with the Ushers. Samplers made at Mrs. Usher's school can be identified by distinctive black background stitching, the figure of a musician playing a flute, and a long-tailed bird in flight.. Textile Fragment 11th century This linen tiraz textile is enlivened with vibrantly colored red, blue, and yellow animals and medallions. Unlike most tiraz, in which the primary decoration is an embroidered inscription, this textile depicts a hare and confronted peacocks. While the decorative motif refers to pre-Islamic Coptic and Sasanian textiles, the textiles late date of the eleventh century reflects a trend toward classical revival in Fatimid artistic production. The stylized kufic inscription is based on the Arabic word for God, "Allah.". Textile Fragment 448111

Hunters in a Landscape ca. 1575-95 Anonymous, 16th century This extremely rare hanging combines an exquisitely well-preserved palette with the distinctive long and narrow format of a wainscot tapestry. In a style referred to by Flemish weavers at the time as "English fashion", it was intended to hang between the cornice and the dado of a wood-paneled room. The tapestry is attributed on stylistic, iconographic and technical grounds to Flemish immigrant weavers who sought refuge from the religious tumult of the era by relocating to England, probably London. In excellent condition, it is a particularly engaging example of the output of this fascinating and only recently studied diaspora of weavers from Flanders. The tapestry is notable for its weavers' remarkable use of color in the construction of forms and effects of light and cast shadow. The idyllic landscape contrasts vistas of pastoral relaxation with a hunting scene, flanking a central moated building. Representative of the magpie

A well-dressed man and woman make music in a fanciful setting of a noble residence with a formal garden. Servants attend them, and animals including a pet monkey and a peacock are also prominent, evoking the wealth and taste for luxury of the group. The harmony of music can symbolize love and fidelity but the sounds and pleasures of music fade, as do fruit and flowers. The embroidery, which may be Spanish, once had a decorative border that probably included the clients coat of arms. Music was an important part of social life.
