Déjatch Alámayou, King Theodore's Son July 1868 Julia Margaret Cameron British, born India Déjatch Alámayou was taken to England after the British defeat of the Ethiopians at the battle of Magdala and the suicide of his father, Tewodros (Theodore) II, emperor of Ethiopia, in April 1868. Queen Victoria took an interest in Alámayou and saw to his education and protection, placing him in the care of Captain Tristram Speedy, who, like Cameron, had a home on the Isle of Wight. Speedy brought the child to Camerons house shortly after his arrival in England, and Cameron made ten photographs of the captain and his charge posed among Ethiopian exotica. In this image, the young orphaned prince cradles a little white doll and stares sadly into space, seemingly lost in thought. His name, Alámayou, means “I have seen the world.”. Studio Portrait: Man Carrying Cello or Large Stringed Instrument, Venice 1860s-70s Carlo Ponti The carte de visite, composed of a print of approximately 2 x 4 inches mounted to card stock, is perhaps the most ubiquitous form of nineteenth-century photography. From the late 1850s through the latter half of the century, these economical keepsakes circulated en masse and spurred a veritable “cartomania.” This is an example of those distributed by the commercial photography studios of Conrad in Naples and Ponti in Venice, depicting occupational “types” related to those cities, such as a hooded member of a religious confraternity, a masked Pulcinella (a stock theater character), a musician, a water carrier, and an oyster shucker, among others. While these stereotypical images charmed tourists interested in foreign customs, they also appealed to a growing clientele of middle-class Italians as a means of reflecting on their own social standing.. Bill Duckett Nude, at the Art Students League of Philadelphia ca. 1889 Thomas Eakins American In the 1880s and 1890s, Eakins explored various artistic applications of photography, from motion studies jointly produced with Eadweard Muybridge to an inventory of naturalistic poses referred to as the "naked series." He also used photography as a formidable tool in the classroom. Indeed, he was forced to resign as director of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1886 after outcries arose against his use of nude male models in womens classes.
