Date: 1729.This painting is from a series of ten magnificent canvases painted to decorate the main room of Ca' Dolfin, Venice. The subject of this triumphal procession is identified by the Latin inscription at the top of the painting, from the Roman historian Lucius Anneus Florus: "The people of Rome behold Jugurtha laden with chains". The African king Jugurtha is shown before his captor, the Roman general Gaius Marius. The procession was held on January 1, 104 B.C. The crowds carry booty, including a bust of the mother goddess Cybele. The thirty-year-old Tiepolo included his self-portrait among the figures on the left. Vernet's painting depicts grooms struggling to restrain the horses before the start of the race--<i>la mossa</i>--in the Piazza del Popolo, which Goethe called "one of the finest sights that can be seen anywhere in the world." Vernet was certainly aware of his friend Gericault's studies of the race when he made this one, which served a preparatory role for a larger composition acquired by the French Ambassador to Rome (now private collection). Girodet found inspiration for this drawing in Aeschyluss Greek tragedy Seven against Thebes. Dramatized with powerful physicality, seven warrior leaders from Argos raise weapons to the war deities Ares and Enyo at the far left as they immerse their hands in the blood of a sacrificed bull, and swear an oath to defeat Thebes. Girodets strong black outlines and idealized male nudes are characteristic of Neoclassicisms calculated restraint. Yet the flash of lightning and the warriors impassioned expressions intensify the emotional and psychological content of the scene, anticipating the growth of romanticism in European art during the early 1800s.

This exotic scene from China features market traders beneath a pagoda selling silks, birds, spices, porcelain, fans and other Eastern riches. Wealthy shoppers appear in fine robes, escorted on rickshaws. Interestingly, a camel is depicted with a howdah and a parasol for the use of a rich merchant. Boucher never visited China. It is thought he produced this tapestry on a Beauvais loom by replicating designs from imported Oriental porcelain and from sketches drawn by Dutchman Arnoldus Montanus during his voyage to Japan in the 17th century.

The Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre, by François Dubois. Oil on panel, Cantonal Museum of Lausanne. François Dubois (1529-1584) was a French Huguenot painter who was born in Amiens. His only surviving work is the best known depiction of the Saint Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572, when French Catholics killed French Protestants (Huguenots) in Paris. It is not known whether Dubois himself was present at the event but a close relative, the surgeon Antoine Dubois, died in the slaughter. Dubois fled to Lausanne to escape the persecution of the Huguenots

Franz Hals (c. 15821666) was born in southern Netherlandswhat is today Belgium. A Dutch Golden Age painter, Hals is credited as a revolutionary in the field of portraiture. He was particularly known for the way he captured light and atmosphere. Shown here is Officers of the Shooting Guild of St. Adriaen, painted in 1633. The secon dof the Officers grouping, it is the finest of all the five 'Schutters-Doelen' at Haarlem. Clever raangement of figures and instantaneous catch of characters - for example, many of the officers have their eyes on viewer, inviting viewer to join in the fun. Among his works are Banquet of the Officers of the Calivermen Civic Guard, Catharina Hooft and her Nurse, Gipsy Girl, and Malle Babbe.

Date: ca. 1827.Beginning in the colonial era, leases in New York City expired on May 1, dubbed Moving Day. This deadline lasted throughout the nineteenth century. On Moving Day, trade in the city stopped entirely as New Yorkers transferred all their possessions from one location to another in a tumult exacerbated by pervasive housing shortages. Businesses also moved, as illustrated here by the layering of shop signs on the building in the center. In the foreground, a woman is sprawled across the contents of an overturned cart, trapped by a table and chest of drawers. She--like the city in general--has been turned upside down. This work and its companion, The Five Points (2016.797.17), are biting satires of the rough, chaotic aspects of life in the city. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

David Roberts RA (1796-1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced during the 1840s from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838-1840). This work, and his large oil paintings of similar subjects, made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
