Bowl 50 BCE-50 CE Syria. Initially affordable only among the wealthy, glass was used in ancient Rome as containers for oils, perfume, and tablewares. The variety of glass-making techniques reveals the changing tastes and fashions over the centuries. During the 1st century A.D., cast glass was a novel form that was a luxury for the Roman household, but by the end of the century, the innovation of blown glass allowed for less labor-intensive and less expensive production, which meant people of lesser means could afford it. Blown glass became so popular it nearly supplanted ceramic and even bronze wares in the home.Ribbed bowls were a luxury ware and a recent development of Hellenized glass workshops in the Eastern Mediterranean that flourished, producing for a new Roman market after Romeís expansion.. Box and Cover, 918-1392. Korea, Goryeo period (918-1392). Celadon; diameter: 3.7 cm (1 7/16 in.); overall: 1.2 cm (1/2 in.). Celadons, spoons, seals, and bronze mirrors were the most common burial objects in tombs during the Goryeo period (918-1392). Once used to contain color powder, rouge and eyebrow gel for makeup, this small container was one of the standard goods that furnished elites' tombs. Goryeo-period women and men used the grain powder of rice or millet for whitening their skin, safflower extract for rouge, and plant ash or soot for eyebrow gel. Yet, natural-looking make-up seems to have been the most favorable one in Korea according to the travelogue by Xu Jing (1091-1153), the Chinese diplomat who visited Korea in 1123.

Punch Bowl c 1789 China. Chinese officials limited all international trading to the city of Canton, and segregated the fan kwae (foreign devils) into a 15-acre area outside of the city wall. Decorated in grisaille, or monochrome, the exterior of this punch bowl shows the 13 trade buildings, known as hongs (foreign factories), that lined this restricted area. Each building was associated with a particular country, and they doubled as counting houses and living quarters, where agents resided during the fall trading season. In this view of the hongs, the American factory lies between those of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, suggesting that this was an early rendering, made before the United States permanently established its factory next to Swedenís.. Terracotta brazier ca. 600-530 B.C. Etruscan One of the braziers (96.18.96, ca. 600 B.C.) is decorated with two different cylinder stamps, one showing a standard animal procession, the other depicting a boar hunt that is known only from five examples excavated at San Giovenale. The other brazier (19.192.53, ca. 550 B.C.) is stamped with a scene of a man and two dogs chasing a hare into a net held by a second man. Such friezes were popular on Protocorinthian vases and Etruscan Pontic ware. The fragment (23.160.94, ca. 540-530 B.C.) depicts pairs of lions attacking a bull and a doe, a subject that was adapted by the Etruscans from Near Eastern and Greek prototypes and that also appears on the Monteleone Chariot (03.23.1), which is on view in this gallery.. (13.49 x 18.89 x 18.89 cm), Kyōyaki ware, Ko-Kiyomizu type; glazed stoneware, Japan, 18th century, Ceramics with reticulated (cut-out) designs were first produced in Japan in the early 17th century, probably by émigré potters from Korea where this decorative technique had a long history. The famous Kyoto potter Nonomura Ninsei also used the technique in the mid-17th century, thus popularizing it among artisans within Japan's cultural capital. The floral and vegetable motifs seen here are known as mon-chirashi, or 'scattered crests,' referring to the stylized family crests that became popular among all levels of society during Japan's Edo period (1615-1868).

Terracotta Little Master cup ca. 565-550 B.C. Greek, Attic, black-figure, 03.24.31: exterior, obverse and reverse, sphinx standing over a nude manThe larger cup demonstrates the basic decorative format of this popular shape. Here, the inscriptions are meaningless strings of letters framing the figural composition, but on other examples, they accurately record the artist's name, label characters depicted, or offer greetings. Little Master cups can be dated more precisely than most Etruscan vases and so are important indicators of the date of this tomb.. Terracotta Little Master cup 247100

Ink Stone, 618-906, 1 1/8 x 2 13/16 x 3 7/8in. (2.9 x 7.1 x 9.8cm), Tuan stone, China, 7th-10th century, This elegantly fashioned, early ink stone is carved in the form of a winnowing basket, a favored shape during Tang. The artisan has cleverly carved the light-grained stone to reveal a dark striation in the center of the well which simulates puddled ink. The small scale and fine condition suggest that this was an object made exclusively for burial.

Beaker. Culture: Hungarian, Úrvölogy (formerly Herrengrund). Dimensions: Overall: 1 15/16 x 3 1/8 x 3 1/8 in. (5 x 8 x 8 cm). Date: early 18th century. This beaker, and a similar one in the museum's collection, 2010.110.66, is in tumbler form with a gilded lip above punched snakeskin decoration. Each show a silver figure of a miner seated on a column rising from the center of the bowl. The figures are made of silver that can be polished. When the bowl was filled with wine the tiny statuette's image would be reflected on the surface of the "golden" beverage, the color of which was intensified by the gilded interior. Copper vessels in this form were popular souvenirs from Herrengrund, at that time in Northern Hungary, now in present-day Slovakia, extolling the seemingly magical qualities of the water in the region, which has unusually high concentrations of copper sulphate. Iron scraps left in pools of water did not actually transform into copper, but collected on their surface considera
