STS098-333-0007 (7-20 February 2001) --- A "sunburst" at Earth's limb caught the attention of one of the STS-98 astronauts who was standing on the aft flight deck of the Space Shuttle Atlantis at the time. Various colors are reflected at different points in the 35mm frame.

ISS028-E-020276 (2 Aug. 2011) --- This photograph of polar mesospheric clouds was acquired at an altitude of just over 202 nautical miles (about 322 kilometers) in the evening hours (03:19:54 Greenwich Mean Time) on Aug. 2, 2011, as the International Space Station was passing over the English Channel. The nadir coordinates of the station were 49.1 degrees north latitude and 5.5 degrees west longitude. Polar mesospheric clouds (also known as noctilucent, or night-shining clouds) are transient, upper atmospheric phenomena that are usually observed in the summer months at high latitudes (greater than 50 degrees) of both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. They appear bright and cloudlike while in deep twilight. They are illuminated by sunlight when the lower layers of the atmosphere are in the darkness of Earths shadow. ISS040-E-089379 (7 Aug. 2014) --- One of the Expedition 40 crew members aboard the International Space Station, from an altitude of 221 nautical miles, photographed this image of Typhoon Halong at 08 02 41 GMT on Aug. 7, 2014. The orbital outpost was flying above a point on Earth located at 15.8 degrees north latitude and 142.4 degrees east longitude. One of the solar panels of the orbital outpost is seen on the left side of the scene.

STS106-709-016 (19 September 2000) --- One of the STS-106 crew members on board the Space Shuttle Atlantis, 204 nautical miles above Earth, used a handheld 70mm camera to photograph this image of the shuttle's cargo bay, a broad band of clouds and a land scene featuring Lake Ontario. Center point coordinates of the ground area are 44 degrees north latitude and 77 degrees west longitude. The Spacehab module, which supports this mission to the International Space Station (ISS), can be seen at the back of the cargo bay. The Atlantis had earlier separated from the ISS after several days of being docked with the orbital outpost.

ISS043E198683 (05/16/2015) --- NASA astronaut Scott Kelly on the International Space Station took this Earth observation photo in the stations cupola that provides a 360 degree view. He tweeted this image with the comment: "The view out my window. #CapeTown #SouthAfrica. #YearInSpace".

The most signficant impact was in the Matanzas province near Pinar del Rio. This scene was captured by one of the Expedition Three crew members aboard the International Space Station (ISS)using a digital still camera.

STS-49, the first flight of the Space Shuttle Orbiter Endeavour, lifted off from launch pad 39B on May 7, 1992 at 6 40 pm CDT. The STS-49 mission was the first U.S. orbital flight to feature 4 extravehicular activities (EVAs), and the first flight to involve 3 crew members working simultaneously outside of the spacecraft. The primary objective was the capture and redeployment of the INTELSAT VI (F-3), a communication satellite for the International Telecommunication Satellite organization, which was stranded in an unusable orbit since its launch aboard the Titan rocket in March 1990. This onboard photo captures the free flying INTELSAT IV.

An astronaut aboard the International Space Station took this nighttime panorama while looking north across Pakistans Indus River valley. The port city of Karachi is the bright cluster of lights facing the Arabian Sea, which appears completely black. City lights and the dark color of dense agriculture closely track with the great curves of the Indus valley. For scale, the distance from Karachi to the foothills of the Himalaya Mountains is 1,160 kilometers (720 miles). This photograph shows one of the few places on Earth where an international boundary can be seen at night. The winding border between Pakistan and India is lit by security lights that have a distinct orange tone. S66-46122 (18 July 1966) --- Agena Target Docking Vehicle 5005 is photographed from the Gemini-Titan 10 (GT-10) spacecraft during rendezvous in space. The two spacecraft are about 38 feet apart. After docking with the Agena, astronauts John W. Young, command pilot, and Michael Collins, pilot, fired the 16,000 pound thrust engine of Agena X's primary propulsion system to boost the combined vehicles into an orbit with an apogee of 413 nautical miles to set a new altitude record for manned spaceflight.

ISS018-E-005019 (23 Oct. 2008) --- Backdropped by the blackness of space and Earth's horizon, the Soyuz TMA-12 spacecraft departs from the International Space Station carrying cosmonauts Sergei Volkov and Oleg Kononenko, Expedition 17 commander and flight engineer, respectively; and American spaceflight participant Richard Garriott. Undocking occurred at 7:16 p.m. (CDT) on Oct. 23, 2008.

ISS009-E-22693 (14 September 2004) --- Hurricane Ivan was photographed as it churned in the Gulf of Mexico late Tuesday (23:06:23 GMT, Sept. 14) by astronaut Edward M. (Mike) Fincke aboard the International Space Station, 230 miles above Earth. At the time, Ivan was a category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 mph. Fincke, the NASA Station Science Officer, and Station Commander Gennady Padalka are in the final month of a six-month mission aboard the research platform.

Not all of them get photographed and not all of the photographed ones are as scenic as this image, photographed by one of the Expedition 40 crew members on June 8, 2014. The image shows the sun in the center of the blue line of atmosphere on the home planet.

ISS028-E-029679 (21 Aug. 2011) --- A night time view of India-Pakistan borderlands is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 28 crew member on the International Space Station. Clusters of yellow lights on the Indo-Gangetic Plain of northern India and northern Pakistan reveal numerous cities both large and small in this photograph. Of the hundreds of clusters, the largest are the metropolitan areas associated with the capital cities of Islamabad, Pakistan in the foreground and New Delhi, India at the topfor scale these metropolitan areas are approximately 700 kilometers apart. The lines of major highways connecting the larger cities also stand out. More subtle but still visible at night are the general outlines of the towering and partly cloud-covered Himalayan ranges immediately to the north (left). A striking feature of this photograph is the line of lights, with a distinctly more orange hue, snaking across the central part of the image. It appears to be more continuous

STS103-710-084 (19-27 December 1999)--- One of the astronauts aboard the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Discovery used a handheld 70mm camera to photograph the great sand seas which occupy northern Algeria. They are Grand Erg Oriental (Eastern Sand Sea) and Grand Erg Occidental (Western Sand Sea). Both sand seas occupy depressions that are separated by a north-south rise called Mizab. Ergs are areas of large accumulations of sand that take the form of actively shifting dunes, fossilized dunes, or extensive sand sheets.

STS083-507-023 (4-8 April 1997)--- A 35mm camera was used to record this time-exposed image of Comet Hale-Bopp at sunset. As a spin-off of the more lengthy time exposure, city lights and petroleum fires are seen as distorted streaks.
