(51.44 × 33.97 × 33.97 cm), Imari ware; porcelain with underglaze cobalt blue, Japan, 17th century, In the 1500s and 1600s, blue-and-white porcelains made at Chinas famed Jingdezhen kilns were extremely popular in Europe, where the technology required to produce porcelain would not be known for another 200 years. When the Jingdezhen kilns entered a period of decline in the mid-1700s, porcelain makers in a town in far western Japan called Arita seized the opportunity and began making blue-and-white porcelains featuring European shapes and Chinese-style decoration for export to Europe. The combinations of flowers and birds used on many of these works—like myna birds and peonies—could also be found in traditional Chinese-style ink paintings. In the 1660s and 70s, the period of time during which this large apothecary bottle was created, Arita dominated the global porcelain market.

Vase Depicting a Phoenixlike Bird 1700-1750 Puebla. Chinese blue-and-white porcelain arrived in the Americas during the 1570s, when the Manila Galleons began crossing the Pacific Ocean from Mexico to the Spanish Philippines and back. Cargoes of Asian luxury goods landing at Acapulco were transshipped to Colonial Mexico City and Puebla, where they remained until shipment continued across the Atlantic Ocean to Seville. A thriving ceramic industry developed in Puebla, producing glazed earthenware imitating porcelain and freely adapting Chinese designs, often with humorous vitality. This vase of Chinese shape displays panels with phoenix-like birds framed by dot-and-leaf patterns, scrolled tendrils, and semicircular ìChinese astersî beneath a cloudlike canopy. Floral bands on the shoulder and footing of the jar similarly reflect decorations derived from blue-and-white export porcelain.. Tin-glazed earthenware . Talavera Poblana (Unknown Role)

Jar late 12th-early 13th century Similar underglaze painted objects are usually attributed to Raqqa, a town on the Euphrates in northeast Syria, from which a large number appeared on the market from the end of the 19th century. While some of the workshops were located there, as the unearthing of a large number of wasters confirms, others were located elsewhere along the Euphrates valley, in southern Anatolia, central Syria, Damascus and as far as Egypt. This jar is said to come from the so-called "Great Find" in Raqqa in the early 20th century, when a colony of Circassians that was being relocated by the Ottomans was given permission to excavate an archaeological area in search of building material. They found a number of large jars containing intact vessels which were eventually sold on the market (see also 56.185.22 and 56.185.15).The cursive inscription painted on the body reads "lasting glory and prosperity". Baluster-shaped vase (part of an assembled garniture) ca. 1690-1720 Japanese, for export market (Hizen ware, Imari type) Japanese porcelain vases made for export were avidly sought by aristocratic and royal patrons to decorate their stately homes and palaces in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. While Chinese porcelains were exported to Europe and Britain in larger quantities during this period, Japanese porcelains were prized for their boldly patterned and richly colored decoration. The popularity of works such as these changed European taste for Asian porcelain, with a more vivid palette preferred over the blue and white decoration which once defined imported porcelains.. Date: 19th century.Cloisonné is a technique for creating designs on metal whereby enclosures made from copper or bronze wire that has been bent or hammered into a desired pattern are filled with colored glass paste. Known as cloisons (French for "partitions"), the enclosures are generally pasted or soldered onto the metal body. The glass paste, or enamel, is colored with metallic oxide and painted into the contained areas. The vessel is then fired, usually at a relatively low temperature, about 800 degrees centigrade. As enamels commonly shrink during firing, the process has to be repeated several times to fill the entire design. Once this process is completed, the surface of the vessel is burnished until the edges of the cloisons are visible. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Apothecary jar (orciuolo) probably 1431 perhaps workshop of Giunta di Tugio It is likely that this large and impressive apothecary jar, decorated with a crane against a ground of oak leaf foliage, belonged to the pharmacy of the Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova, Florence's oldest and most distinguished hospital. Its likely maker, Giunta di Tugio, delivered many maiolica wares to the hospital, especially in the year 1431. The existence of other apothecary jars in the same style, also bearing the hospital's emblem, a crutch, suggests that they all form part of an extensive commission of maiolica wares executed by Giunta after Hispano-Moresque prototypes.. Storage jar (albarello). Culture: Italian, perhaps Naples or environs. Dimensions: Overall (confirmed): 12 3/16 × 6 7/8 × 6 7/8 in. (31 × 17.5 × 17.5 cm). Date: ca. 1500.Storage vessels were among the most frequently produced maiolica wares in late medieval and Renaissance Italy. Made in fairly standard shapes, they were designed to fit with dozens of others on a shelf, often in a pharmacy or shop. Their handles therefore tend to fit within the vessel's profile, and the cylindrical albarello type is generally narrower at the middle than at the top or bottom, making it easy to grip. Other common features include inscriptions indicating contents and flanged lips to help secure cloth or paper seals. The decoration, usually more elaborate on one side than the other, can sometimes link pieces to a known dispensary or specific workshop or artist. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Vase with Scholar in a Landscape (one of a pair) ca. 1915-35 China Early in the twentieth century, under the auspices of Yuan Shikai, some ceramics of surprisingly fine quality were produced at the Jingdezhen kilns of Jiangxi Province. Yuan had been named president of the Chinese Republic in 1912, and his ambitions to become emperor were realized in December 1915, when he "accepted" the throne. His reign was short-lived, however, as he died in June 1916.This pair of vases have mirror-image designs that have been painted over the glaze in sepia and black pigments with minute attention to detail. They are marked on the base with Yuan Shikai's reign title, Hongxian, and they stand as proof of a degree of excellence in ceramic manufacture that is generally unexpected in wares of this period.. Drug Jar, 1550. Maiolica earthenware jar. Place of manufacture: Castelli, Italy.. The material used to make this drug jar is known in Italy as Maiolica.. It is earthenware with a thick, opaque white surface called tin glaze... Maiolica was established in the northern half of Italy by the mid-15th century when the pots were often decorated with bold patterns in green and purple.. As the industry developed throughout Italy, characteristic shapes emerged, amongst them drug jars like this used for display in pharmacies. The decoration on this pot shows a portrait of a bearded man in a damask robe, with an inscription reading 'nt agipriac', a contraction of the latin name of its original medicinal contents.

On the lower body, broad bands of Mazarine blue, a difficult-to-achieve glaze for which the firm was renowned, are painted with powdered gold and gilt vermiculation. Albarello ca. 1470-1500 Italian, Faenza Storage vessels were among the most frequently produced maiolica wares in late medieval and Renaissance Italy. Made in fairly standard shapes, they were designed to fit with dozens of others on a shelf, often in a pharmacy or shop. Their handles therefore tend to fit within the vessels profile, and the cylindrical albarello type is generally narrower at the middle than at the top or bottom, making it easy to grip. Other common features include inscriptions indicating contents and flanged lips to help secure cloth or paper seals. The decoration, usually more elaborate on one side than the other, can sometimes link pieces to a known dispensary or specific workshop or artist.. Albarello. Italian, Faenza. ca. 1470-1500. Vase (one of a pair) ca. 1870 Minton(s) British These vases reflect Christopher Dressers work in its most overtly decorative vein. The primary aesthetic impact of the vases lies in the strong pink ground, and the ‘cloisonné decoration, applied in bands, is further removed from a true cloisonné appearance than is normally encountered in Dressers work in this genre. There is a boldness to the simplicity of the decorative scheme, which relies on a strong color offset by two primary areas of dense pattern. These vases are unlike any other ceramic works designed by Dresser in the Museums collection. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #418.
