Half of an Arch Arcus Lutii Septimi from the series 'Ruinarum variarum fabricarum delineationes pictoribus caeterisque id genus artificibus multum utiles' 1554 Lambert Suavius Netherlandish Perspectival depiction of the left half of a double triumphal arch, said to be the ‘Arcus Lutii Septimii’ set in a stylized landscape. The arch appears to be placed on a square and is stripped from all its ornaments and relief decorations, aside from a statue which crowns one of the protruding piers with Ionic or Composite pillars that flank the arches. While the proportions are incorrect, the overall composition of the arch resembles the arch of Septimius Severus in Rome.This print and several others in this series published by Gerard de Jode were copied after a group of Italian architectural prints, previously attriputed to the Master G. Steps lead to a platform with seated warriors at the corners, more steps lead to the colonnade surrounding the bottom part of a circular temple. The top of the wall at the rear of the colonnade is surrounded by a frieze. Steps rise over the entablature upon which a tambour supports a dome. Festoons connect bull's eyes in the tambour. A group of figures supporting an eye sphere is shown on a pedestal at the front side of the dome. Date: ca. 1790. Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae: Elevation Showing the Exterior of Saint Peter's Basilica from the South as Conceived by Michelagelo (Published in 1569) 1558-61 Etienne DuPérac French This print comes from the museums copy of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) The Speculum found its origin in the publishing endeavors of Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. During their Roman publishing careers, the two foreign publishers - who worked together between 1553 and 1563 - initiated the production of prints recording art works, architecture and city views related to Antique and Modern Rome. The prints could be bought individually by tourists and collectors, but were also purchased in larger groups which were often bound together in an album. In 1573, Lafreri commissioned a title page for this purpose, which is where the title ‘Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae first appears. Lafreri envisioned an ideal arrangement of the prints in 7 different categories,
