This colorized negative stained transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showed recreated 1918 influenza virions that were collected from the supernatant of a 1918-infected Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cell culture 18 hours after infection. In order to sequester these virions, the MDCK cells were spun down (centrifugation), and the 1918 virus present in the fluid was immediately fixed for negative staining.

Though Salmonella infantis is indeed one of the Salmonella spp. pathogens responsible for causing Salmonellosis, half of all salmonellosis cases are caused by 2 serotypes: S. enteritidis (SE), and S. typhimurium (ST), which is responsible for the disease Typhoid fever. Clinical features of Salmonellosis include fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea, which is sometimes bloody. Occasionally these bacteria can establish a localized infection such as septic arthritis, or can even progress to sepsis, which occurs due to the systemic spread of these pathogens.

This SEM depicts a number of Gram-negative, non-motile Acinetobacter baumannii bacteria, Mag: 12365x. Members of the genus Acinetobacter are nonmotile rods, 1.0-1.5m in diameter, and 1.5-2.5m in length, becoming spherical during their stationary growth phase, they're widely distributed in nature, and are normal flora on the skin. Some members of the genus are important because they are an emerging cause of hospital acquired pulmonary, ie pneumoniae, hemopathic, and wound infections.

Under a high magnification of 15549x, this colorized scanning electron micrograph (SEM) depicted some of the ultrastructural details seen in the cell wall configuration of a number of Gram-positive Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. As an obligate aerobic organism M. tuberculosis can only survive in an environment containing oxygen. This bacterium ranges in length between 2 - 4 microns, and a width between 0.2 - 0.5 microns.
