Three Dutch Figures Eastman Johnson (American, 1824-1906). Three Dutch Figures, ca. 1852. This sheet contains preparatory figure studies for a genre painting of peasants begging for alms at the door of a castle. Eastman Johnsons handling of the medium enhances his characterization: the loose, energetic quality of his line conveys the nervous desperation and bedraggled appearance of the beggars. Military driving school in Breda, 1843-1844. Eleven scenes with riders of the military driving school in Breda of the 1043-1844. The riders have been proposed during different exercises, a few times in the presence of instructors. With every scene, the name of the proposed is noted with a pencil. In a frame with tendrils and vignettes concerning equestrian sport. At the top of a vignette with inscription '1843 Breda 1844' in a ray wreath between weapons and banners.

(26.67 × 18.1 × 0.95 cm), Woodblock printed book; ink on paper, Japan, 18th century, By the early 1700s, when this printed version of The Tale of Genji was published, very few people could understand the complex written language in which the original tale had been written 700 years earlier. For this illustrated and modernized version of the tale, Okumura Masanobu wrote in a manner that reflected Japanese as it was spoken in the early 1700s. The text was rendered freely, placing emphasis on conveying the meaning rather than offering a verbatim presentation of the original tale.
