Double-Barrelled Superbooster -- Jumbo-sized exhaust pipes, housing afterburners, are attached to the twin-jet engines of the Air Force's new Northrop Scorpion F-89 all-weather interceptor. The afterburners, a comparatively new aircraft powerplant development, are expected to greatly increase the Scorpion's rate of climb. They are attached to jet engines to provide additional thrust for brief intervals the Scorpion is being inspected here at the Northrop plant at Hawthorne, calif. April 16, 1950
