Robert Carr, Earl of Somerset, and Frances Howard, Countess of Somerset (1590 - 1632), notorious murderous English aristocrats. Married at 14 to the Earl of Essex, Frances spent years trying to annul the marriage so she could marry her true love Robert Carr, Earl of Somerset. The annulment was vehemently opposed by Sir Thomas Overbury, but in 1613, he was poisoned in prison by Howard's maid Anne Turner, allowing Frances to finally divorce her first husband and remarry Carr. In the trial in 1615, Frances and Robert were found guilty of plotting to murder Overbury, sent to prison, but pardoned by James I in 1622.. Copperplate engraved portraitures.
