An inferior mirage dances on the horizon in the flat desert of the interior Sahara. When light rays pass from cool air to warmer air, they bend away from the direction of the temperature gradient. When air near the ground is warmer, common with hot sand or pavement, the rays bend upwards. This tricks the viewer's eye into projecting an image of the sky on the ground, which usually appears to be water or liquid in the distance.
