A male Gelada sits on a rock on the western scarp of the Abyssinian Rift. Here, at Gooch Meda, the scarp rises to over 11,000 feet above sea level. Troops of Gelada baboons thrive in this region where the climate is more alpine than tropical. Found only in Ethiopia, the Gelada differs from true baboons in having its nostrils some way from the tip of its muzzle.
