New danger threatened the 28,200 tons Orient liner 'Oronsay' when thousands of gallons of water pumped into her blazing hull gave her superilous list to-day (Sunday) after firemen had battled through the night to save the ship, flaming in the Barrow-in-Furness yards where she was fitting out for her maiden voyage in 1951. Franklin, an Essex-class carrier was hit by enemy bombs while participating in air strikes against the Japanese fleet in the enemys Inland Sea. Operating less than 60 miles (96 kms.) from the Japanese coast, with many of her planes fully armed and fuelled, the carrier was attacked by a Japanese dive-bomber which scored two hits with quarter-ton armor-piercing bombs. Women Come Ashore With Pistols -- Customs officers today found automatic pistols strapped (shown above) around the waists of two women passengers aboard the Italian liner Toscana. The women - mother and daughter - were noticed to be walking awkwardly - and were searched. Then they were questioned for two hours by customs investigators, and released.
